  • Ebook "Targeting functional centers of the ribosome" describes research into the mode of function, inhibition, and evolution of the ribosomal catalytic center, the Peptidyl Transferase Center (PTC)--research that has already led to attempts at improving PTC antibiotics. In the second parallel study, the candidate synthesized a ribosomal substructure--one that may represent the minimal entity capable of catalyzing peptide bond formation--shedding light on the origin of the ribosome itself.

  • The numerical results show a good correlation with the experimental results of the beam specimens, such as load-displacement curves, crack patterns, and failure modes. They allow confirming the capability of the developed FE model to predict the flexural performance of strengthened beams considering CFRP/concrete interfacial behavior.

  • Methylobacterium spp. are a group of bacteria known as pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophs (PPFMs) capable of growing on single carbon compounds such as formate, formaldehyde, and methanol as well as on a variety of multicarbon compounds having no carbon-carbon bonds. They are distributed ubiquitously in the plant phyllosphere and rhizosphere and have been isolated from many species of plants. Methylotrophs are known to play an important role in increasing crop yield and soil fertility.

  • Simple, efficient and practical CO2 capture method is reported using task-specific ionic liquid (IL) supported onto the amine-functionalized silica gel. The results have been shown that both the capacity and rate of the CO2 absorption notably increase in the supported IL/molecular sieve 4 A˚ system in comparison of homogeneous IL. Additionally, it has shown that the prepared material is capable for reversible carbon dioxide absorption for at least 10 cycles without significant loss of efficiency.

  • This paper presents a high precision bonding approach, capable of submicron alignment accuracy, based on the thermosonic flip-chip bonding technique and misalignment self-correction elements. The precision of the bonding technique is guaranteed by using of misalignment self-correction bump (convex) and hollow (concave) elements.

  • As regional leaders grapple with these design questions, they learn to become more trusting of one another. As these relationships grow, leaders’ capacity to think and act quickly on complex strategic issues can increase dramatically. Stronger, more focused leadership networks emerge that are capable of taking on the challenges of transforming a regional economy. Successful regions build stable, pragmatic partnerships composed of people who share important qualities. These individuals possess the personal integrity needed to strengthen the bonds of trust within the team.

  • The new antigen receptor (IgNAR) from sharks is a disul-phide bonded dimer of two protein chains, each containing one variable and five constant domains, and functions as an antibody. In order to assess the antigen-binding capabilities of isolated IgNAR variable domains (VNAR),we have con-structed anin vitro library incorporating synthetic CDR3 regions of 15–18 residues in length.

  • The physiological role of a bifunctional enzyme, 3,4-dihydrocoumarin hydrolase (DCH), which is capable of both hydrolysis of ester bonds and organic acid-assisted bromination of organic compounds, was investigated. Purified DCH fromAcinetobacter calcoaceticusF46 cata-lysed dose- and time-dependent degradation of peracetic acid. The gene (dch) was cloned from the chromosomal DNA of the bacterium.

  • Three mammalian ADAMTS enzymes, ADAMTS-1, -4 and -5, are known to cleave aggrecan at certain glutamyl bonds and are considered to be largely responsible for car-tilage aggrecan catabolismobservedduring the development of arthritis. We have previously reported that certain cate-chins, polyphenolic compounds found in highest concen-trationingreentea(Camellia sinensis), are capable of inhibiting cartilage aggrecan breakdown in anin vitromodel of cartilage degradation.

  • Most of the sovereign bank debt likely to be exchanged, however, is held by larger German, French and Swiss banks with the capability (if not necessarily the desire) to take the write-offs required. The overhang of such future losses affects the entire European banking system at a time when it too is being restructured.

  • An important aspect of any adhesive bond is that the bond maintains its integrity during its end use. Epoxies form highly durable bonds with many substrates but are usually not considered capable of forming completely durable bonds with wood by standard accelerated tests. However, epoxies are sold for wood boat construction, and some data have indicated that epoxies can have sufficient exterior durability for general use in wood products. This conflicting information raises an important question.

  • In modern usage, the term is used to describe devices capable of performing mechanical work, as in the original steam engine. In most cases the work is produced by exerting a torque or linear force, which is used to operate other machinery which can generate electricity, pump water, or compress gas. In the context of propulsion systems, an air-breathing engine is one that uses atmospheric air to oxidise the fuel carried rather than supplying an independent oxidizer, as in a rocket.
