Bone healing on animal research models

Rats have been widely used as experimental animals when performing fundamental research because they are economical, rapidly reproducing, and heal quickly. While the rat interbody fusion model has been applied in basic studies, existing rat models generally have shortcomings, such as insufficiently simulating clinical surgery.

The present research reviewed previously published studies with the objective to enhance the understandings of the effects of different drugs on bone healing. There is clear evidence that antibiotics, corticosteroids, nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs, and chemotherapeutic drugs all affect bone healing.
