In the last decade, remarkable advances have been made in bone marrow transplantation (BMT), which is now becoming a powerful tool in the treatment of diseases such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and congenital immunodeficiency. In animal experiments, it has been found that BMT can be used to treat not only systemic autoimmune diseases but also organ-specific autoimmune diseases. In humans, it has recently been shown that rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease can be successfully treated after BMT.

Ebook "Stem cell therapy in lysosomal storage diseases" discusses the history, current practice and future perspectives of stem cells in inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) and provides an international perspective on progress, limitations, and future directions in the field. Beginning with an overview of these diseases, the book covers the breadth of this topic from treatment options, bone marrow transplantation, and alternative treatment options, through long-term outcomes and future perspectives.

Pyogenic spondylitis by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is known to be intractable. In the past, the insertion of an implant into infected vertebra was considered contraindicated in affected patients because it may exacerbate the infection, but there are increasing numbers of reports indicating the usefulness of posterior fixation to correct instability and alleviate infection.

The patient underwent bone marrow biopsy showing hypocellular marrow with erythroid-dominant, dysplastic hematopoiesis. A thorough panel of investigations to rule out secondary causes led to the diagnosis of aplastic anemia, for which the patient is currently being managed with oral ciclosporin plus eltrombopagbridging therapy, plus counselling for the potential requirement for stem cell transplant.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is an aggressive hematological neoplasm typically more common in children than adults. More prolonged remissions and a potential cure can be achieved if allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is performed. Outcomes after allo-HSCT vary significantly among patients, and multiple factors contribute to these outcomes.

Recurrence of multiple myeloma is among the most challenging issues for patients and treating physicians reported after autologous stem cell transplantation. However, extramedullary involvement after chemotherapy and transplantation has been rarely reported, especially as pleural manifestations.

Mucolipidosis type II (ML-II, I-cell disease) is a fatal inherited lysosomal storage disease caused by a deficiency of the enzyme N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphotransferase. A characteristic skeletal phenotype is one of the many clinical manifestations of ML-II. Since the mechanisms underlying these skeletal defects in ML-II are not completely understood, we hypothesized that a defect in osteogenic differentiation of ML-II bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) might be responsible for this skeletal phenotype.

This study evaluated whether Schwann-like cells (SLCs) induced from bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) transplanted into acellular nerve grafts (ANGs) could repair nerve defects compared with nerve isografts and ANGs with BM-MSCs.

The objectives of this study were to (1) to quantify CD45+ Collagen-1+ fibrocytes and a novel epithelial-like population of bone marrow-derived cells, which express Clara Cell Secretory Protein, in patients at the time of lung transplant and (2) to evaluate mediators that may act to recruit these cells during injury.

Idiopathic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) occurs at a relatively younger age. It is therefore important to prevent the resultant femoral head collapse and requirement of total hip arthroplasty in these patients.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a common disease that greatly affects the quality of life of patients. Repair of the necrotic area is key to successful treatment. Currently, the combination of stem cell transplantation and decompression is used clinically to promote the repair of necrotic areas based on the characteristics of stem cells.

Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disorder characterized by deterioration in the quantity and quality of bone tissue, with a consequent increase susceptibility to fracture. Methods: In this study, we sought to determine the efficacy of platelet-rich fibrin releasates (PRFr) in augmenting the therapeutic effects of stem cell-based therapy in treating osteoporotic bone disorder.

Stem cells are an alternative and attractive source of therapy because of their proliferative nature and the ability to produce distinct specialized cells. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which are derived from bone marrow, possess an anti-inflammatory property and the ability of selfrenewal and differentiation into a variety of specialized cells. MSCs are widely used to treat different diseases including DN and they have shown encouraging outcomes. This review provides details about the regenerative efficiency of using MSCs in treating diabetic nephropathy.

Hepatic fibrosis is considered as the initial state of any chronic hepatic disease; progression causes accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) and develops into cirrhosis. In case of liver failure, transplantation was considered as the only suitable therapy but due to the hurdles in transplantation, therapy using stem cells was promoted. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are widely used for the treatment of a variety of diseases. Oxidative stress at the damage site causes poor MSC proliferation and engraftment. Thus, it is necessary to induce antioxidants with MSCs to enhance potency.
