This research project investigates the influence of decoration and decorating on a fashion design practice, exploring the transformative effects of both in relation to surface and structure. Decoration is considered an after-effect, an element that can be differentiated from the object it adheres to, sometimes making it superfluous to the object’s function. In this project I consider decoration as having its own function – the ability, through its link to the ‘exterior’ world, to transform the shape, appearance and materials of forms by modifying their facade.

We report the cloning and functional charaterization of the full-length cDNA and gene encoding a Toxoplasma gondii DNA repair enzyme designated TgDRE. The gene is composed of three exons separated by two introns of 780 and 630 bp, and encodes a protein with a predicted molecular mass of 49.6 kDa. The native TgDRE protein, with a molecular mass of 60 kDa, is only detected in the virulent tachyzoite stage of T. gondii. However, the transcript is present in both asexual parasite stages, virulent tachyzoite and avirulent encysted bradyzoite. ...

The unit in procedural programming is function, and unit in object-oriented programming is class Procedural programming concentrates on creating functions, while object-oriented programming starts from isolating the classes, and then look for the methods inside them. Procedural programming separates the data of the program from the operations that manipulate the data, while object-oriented programming focus on both of them

Dnmt3a is ade novoDNA methyltransferase that modifies unmethylated DNA. In contrast Dnmt1 shows high pre-ference for hemimethylatedDNA. However, Dnmt1 can be activated for themethylationof unmodifiedDNA.We show here that the Dnmt3a andDnmt1 DNA methyltransferases functionally cooperate in de novo methylation of DNA, because a fivefold stimulation of methylation activity is observed if both enzymes are present.

Cryptochromes are blue-light photoreceptors sharing sequence similarity to photolyases, a class of flavoenzymes catalyzing repair ofUV-damagedDNAvia electron transfer mechanisms. Despite significant amino acid sequence simi-larity in both catalytic and cofactor-binding domains, cryptochromes lack DNA repair functions associated with photolyases, and the molecular mechanism involved in cryptochrome signaling remains obscure.

Previously, we isolated a 4-kDa peptide capable of binding to a 43-kDa receptor-like protein and stimulating protein kinase activity of the 43-kDa protein in soybean. Both of them were found to localize in the plasma membranes and cell walls. Here, we report the physiological effects of 4-kDa peptide expressed transiently in the cultured carrot and bird’s-foot trefoil cells transfected with pBI 121 plas-mid containing the 4-kDa peptide gene.

Activation of a calcium-sensing receptor (Ca-SR) leads to increased intracellular calcium concentration and altered cellular activities. The expression of Ca-SR has been iden-tified in both nonexcitable and excitable cells, including neurons and smooth muscle cells. Whether Ca-SR was expressed and functioning in cardiac myocytes remained unclear. In the present study, the transcripts of Ca-SR were identified in rat heart tissues usingRT-PCRthat was further confirmed by sequence analysis.

Viral subversion of apoptosis regulation plays an important role in the outcome of host⁄virus interactions. Although human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) encodes several immediate early (IE) antiapoptotic proteins (IE1, IE2, vMIA and vICA), no proapoptotic HCMV protein has yet been iden-tified. Here we show that US28, a functional IE HCMV-encoded chemo-kine receptor, which may be involved in both viral dissemination and immune evasion, constitutively induces apoptosis in several cell types.

Functional diversity of potassium channels in both prokaryotic and euk-aryotic cells suggests multiple levels of regulation. Posttranslational regula-tion includes differential subunit assembly of homologous pore-forming subunits. In addition, a variety of modulatory subunits may interact with the pore complex either statically or dynamically. Kv2.1 is a delayed recti-fier potassium channel isolated by expression cloning.

The structures of MornigaM and the MornigaM–mannose complex have been determined at 1.8 A˚ and 2.0 A˚ resolution, respectively. Both struc-tures adopt the typical b-prism motif found in other jacalin-related lectins and their tetrameric assembly closely resembles that of jacalin. The carbo-hydrate-binding cavity of MornigaM readily binds mannose. No major structural rearrangements can be observed in MornigaM upon binding of mannose. These results allow corroboration of the structure–function rela-tionships within the small group of Moraceae lectins....

ATP-NAD kinase phosphorylates NAD to produce NADP by using ATP, whereas ATP-NADH kinase phosphorylates both NAD and NADH. Three NAD kinase homologues, namely, ATP-NAD kinase (Utr1p), ATP-NADH kinase (Pos5p) and function-unknown Yel041wp (Yef1p), are found in the yeastSaccharomyces cerevisiae. In this study, Yef1p was identified as an ATP-NADH kinase. The ATP-NADH kinase activity of Utr1p was also confirmed.

Ribosomal proteins hold a unique position in biology because their func-tion is so closely tied to the large rRNAs of the ribosomes in all kingdoms of life. Following the determination of the complete crystal structures of both the large and small ribosomal subunits from bacteria, the functional role of the proteins has often been overlooked when focusing on rRNAs as the catalysts of translation.

The hemocyanin of the tiger shrimp,Penaeus monodon, was investigated with respect to stability and oxygen binding. While hexamers occur as a major component, dodecamers and traces of higher aggregates are also found. Both the hexamers and dodecamers were found to be extremely sta-ble against dissociation at high pH, independently of the presence of cal-cium ions, in contrast to the known crustacean hemocyanins.

Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) functions as a homodimer. In cell extracts, iNOS molecules partition both in cytosolic and particulate frac-tions, indicating that iNOS exists as soluble and membrane associated forms. In this study, iNOS features were investigated in human intestinal epithelial cells stimulated with cytokines and in duodenum from mice exposed to flagellin. Our experiments indicate that iNOS is mainly associ-ated with the particulate fraction of cell extracts.
