Broad spectrum antibiotics

Tetracycline (TC) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment of several infectious diseases. The excessive use of tetracycline antibiotics, especially tetracyclines in livestock, has raised concerns about residues of tetracycline antibiotics in food that may affect consumers' health.

Gut microbiome has been linked to a regulatory role in cancer progression. However, whether broadspectrum antibiotics (ATB) associated gut microbiome dysbiosis contributes to an impaired T cell immune function, and ultimately promotes lung cancer metastasis is not well known.

Pseudomembranous colitis (PMC) is characterized by the presence of an inflammatory pseudomembrane overlying the colonic mucosa, and is primarily caused by Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). PMC is often associated with the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, mucus in stool, abdominal cramps, and fever.

The problem of increasing resistance against conventional antibiotics has drawn people’s attention. Therefore, the development of novel antibacterial agents with effective and safe therapeutic effects is imminent. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered a promising class of antibacterial agents due to their broad antibacterial spectrum.

The increasing spectrum of multidrug-resistant bacteria is a major global public health concern, necessitating discovery of novel antimicrobial agents. Here, members of the genus Bacillus are investigated as a potentially attractive source of novel antibiotics due to their broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities. We specifically focus on a computational analysis of the distinctive biosynthetic potential of Bacillus paralicheniformis strains isolated from the Red Sea, an ecosystem exposed to adverse, highly saline and hot conditions.

Cryptocaryon irritans is an obligate parasitic ciliate protozoan that can infect various commercially important mariculture fish species and cause high lethality and economic loss. Current methods of controlling this parasite with chemicals or antibiotics are widely considered to be environmentally harmful. Piscidins with broad spectrum antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activities were found to have potent activity against C. irritans. Little, however, has been understood about the killing mechanisms of piscidins in parasites.

Ventilator-associated respiratory infections (tracheobronchitis, pneumonia) contribute significant morbidity and mortality to adults receiving care in intensive care units (ICU). Administration of broad-spectrum intravenous antibiotics, the current standard of care, may have systemic adverse effects.

Carbapenems are one of the β-Lactam antibiotics with a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity. Inappropriate use of this antibiotic can produce resistance strains by production of carbapenemases enzyme. The Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) is the most important mechanism of enzymatic resistance seen in Enterobacteriaceae isolated especially Klebsiella pneumoniae. The aim and objectives of this study was isolation and detection of the Carbapenem resistant Klebsiella species strains with phenotypic methods. Out of 11248 samples, 602 Klebsiella species (33.

The antimicrobial effect of hot and cold water extracts and infusions of herbs oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), prepared in concentrations of 20%, was investigated using the classical agar-gel diffusion method. Pure cultures of 20 pathogenic strains were tested (by 4 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans). The highest antibacterial and antimycotic effect in vitro exhibited the infusions of both herbs, similar to that of the control broad-spectrum antibiotic thiamphenicol.

Enterococci, initially considered as normal commensal of intestinal tract have recently emerged as a medically important pathogen. Incidence of enterococccal infection is significantly high in patients suffering from urinary tract infection, blood stream infection and surgical sites infection. Nosocomial enterococcal infection is also common in organ transplants recipients cancer patients and debilitated patients receiving broad spectrum antibiotics. One of the important causes of development of multi drug resistant Enterococci is antibiotic selective pressure.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is chronic inflammation of middle ear and mastoid cavity with recurrent ear discharge lasting for more than 6months. Studies are mainly done on the bacterial aetiology of CSOM, but very little is known about the fungal aspects of such cases. Otomycosis is increasing in the recent years because of the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, corticosteroids, and an increase in the number of immune deficiency disorders.

Antibacterial susceptibility profiles of alum were determined against bacteria isolated from shellfish bivalve oysters. In-vitro bioassay using disc and agar well diffusion techniques with different concentrations; 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0% of Alum were used to determine the susceptibility profiles of these isolates and compared with standard antibiotic, Ofloxacin (OFL) as control. Diameter of inhibition zones (DIZ) also were determined by measuring with a meter rule.

Bacterial multidrug resistanceis a phenomenon that has been growing with increasing speed worldwide. New mechanisms of resistance have been described in different bacterial pathogens, representing a threat to effective treatments of common infectious diseases with currently available drugs. The use of drugs known as "non-antibiotics are among the alternative approaches to the use of conventional antibiotics. This approach has been studied in order to counteract the global threat of multidrug resistance. This group of drugs includes various non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Antimicrobial resistance is a current and fore coming worldwide problematic issue. It is more prevalent in healthcare settings; especially in hospital intensive care units. This study aimed to present a simple means of constructing an antibiotic policy from results of cumulative antibiograms for patients’ cultures [sputum, urine, blood, wounds] using a battery of narrow and broad spectrum antibiotics.
