Brucellosis is a zoonosis whose incidence is not declining worldwide despite the global effort to control the disease. Accurate and precise diagnosis is a crucial step in any prophylaxis program but single tests to unequivocally detect animals infected with Brucella spp. are currently unavailable.

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease prevalent worldwide. It is caused by different species of Brucella in different animal species and humans. Early and accurate diagnosis of the disease is crucial for its control. Here we discuss the current trends in clinical, serological and molecular diagnosis of the disease in the common domestic animals.

Economic losses by brucellosis in animals owing to abortions, premature births, decreased milk production and repeat breeding and may lead to temporary or permanent infertility in infected livestock. Economic losses due to brucellosis in livestock are considerable in an agrarian country like India.

Brucellosis is known as undulant fever or Malta fever, caused by the genus Brucella. It is the most common human zoonosis. The disease is worldwide distributed and causes significant economic losses. In animals, it causes abortion, reduction in milk production, and infertility. While brucellosisin humans is a debilitating disease with various clinical manifestations that may lead to death in some cases.

Brucellosis is a contagious and reproductive disease of animals mainly caused by Brucella abortus, B. melitensis, B. suis and B. canis. Diagnosis and identification of associated risk factors in brucellosis is important in devising an effective control strategy. This study is mainly focused to find out the prevalence and assessment of risk factors in lactating cows for bovine brucellosis from eleven districts of Tamil Nadu.

Brucellosis is a major bacterial zoonosis of global importance. Bovine brucellosis is endemic in all states of India. However, the exact extent of the disease occurrence in the unorganized herds is not known. The present study was undertaken for serological diagnosis of brucellosis in cattle from a local gaushala (cow shelter) employing common agglutination tests RBPT, STAT and MAT and ELISA. Out of 56 samples from cattle from the Gaushala, 37.5% samples by RBPT, 64.28% each by STAT and MAT and 49.23% samples by ELISA, respectively were found to be positive for anti-Brucella antibodies.

Sheep and goat brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis, one of the most virulent Brucella species accounting for economic losses through abortion, stillbirths, reduction of milk yield and infertility. Disease has wide socioeconomic impact, in countries where, livestock sector is the major source of rural income. Early diagnosis is essential to minimise the spread of the disease besides public health importance. The present study reports the isolation, identification, biotyping and molecular confirmation of Brucella spp.

Brucellosis is an important infectious disease of livestock affecting a wide range of animal species including human and is characterized by abortions, fetal death, reproductive tract complications and arthritis in animals with great losses. Early precise diagnosis with more sensitive and specific test is a very important for its control and eradication.

Brucellosis still remains an infectious, highly contagious and re-emerging endemic zoonosis especially in the Mediterranean and Middle-East regions of the world involving many countries including India where it constitutes occupational hazard (Shakerian et al., 2013 and Khamesipour et al., 2014). It also poses a serious threat to livestock economy by causing abortion, loss of offspring, infertility and reduction in milk yield.

Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonosis transmitted directly or indirectly to humans from infected animals, predominantly domesticated ruminants and swine. The disease is known colloquially as undulant fever because of its remittent character. Its distribution is worldwide apart from the few countries where it has been eradicated from the animal reservoir. Although brucellosis commonly presents as an acute febrile illness, its clinical manifestations vary widely, and definitive signs indicative of the diagnosis may be lacking.
