Bryophyte flora

This study provides an identification key to the species of Riccia in Turkey and also gives information about detailed morphological and anatomic characters, reproductive forms, detailed photos of Riccia species and their spores, ecological preferences, and distribution patterns in the Mediterranean, Europe, and Southwest Asia. The number of Riccia taxa in Turkey has reached 27 including R. atromarginata, reported for the first time from Turkey in this study. Additionally, the presence of R. gougetiana var. armatissima and R. trabutiana in Turkey is confirmed here.

In this study carried out in the Sündiken Mountains, 83 taxa were identified by the authors. These belong to 21 families and 42 genera of bryophytes. Of these, 64 taxa are new for the B7 grid-square adopted by Henderson.

Hedwigia ciliata (Hedw.) Ehrh. ex P.Beauv. var. leucophaea Bruch & Schimp. is recorded as a new taxon for the bryophyte flora of Turkey. It belongs to the H. ciliata complex sensu lata that consists of three different taxa: H. stellata, H. ciliata var. ciliata, and H. ciliata var. leucophaea.

The recent bryophyte flora of South-West Asia is heterogeneous and consists of 6 floral elements [(Sub)cosmopolitan taxa, northern taxa, xerotherm-Pangaean taxa, circum-Tethyan taxa, tropical taxa, and endemics of various origins] that are derived from the different Pangaean ancestral floral stocks.

The nearest localities to Turkey for this species are in Bulgaria, Greece, the Caucasus, and Iran. This submeridional species was collected from 3 different localities (in Bolu and Bartın provinces) in Turkey. A site description, illustrations, and diagnostic characters of the Turkish specimens are given, together with notes on its distribution and ecology.

This study presents the bryophyte flora of the western part of the Küre Mountains, situated in A2 square in the grid system adopted by Henderson, and entirely within the Euro-Siberian phytogeographic region. A total of 1545 bryophyte specimens were collected from the research area in 2008 and 2009.

Sixty mosses belonging to 12 families and 31 genera are presented from Al-Ghab plain in north-west Syria. Among these, 29 species are recorded for the first time for the bryophyte flora of Syria.

In this study, the bryophyte flora of Melendiz Mountain (Niğde Province) was investigated. In total, 99 taxa were found in this area. Of these, 4 taxa were liverworts and 95 taxa were mosses. According to Henderson’s grid-square system, 39 moss taxa for the B8 square and 12 moss taxa for the C13 square are new records.
