  • Study was carried out in Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh involving 120 buffalo owners scattered in eight villages of two Tehsil. The farmers were further categorized into three groups viz., small (< 2 adult buffaloes), medium (> 2 and < 5 adult bufalloes) and large (> 5 adult buffaloes) householders. Data pertaining to various aspects of housing and feeding practices were collected through a pre- tested questionnaire.

  • A study was conducted at the Banaras Hindu University Dairy Farm to estimate the effects of feeding management practices on rearing of animals and milk production in terms of economic analysis. The data pertaining to the feeds and feeding systems being followed and their input costs were collected from the records maintained for all the animals at the dairy farm. The lactation yield of cows and buffaloes has been worked out to 996 and 1150 Litres, respectively. The cost of daily feeding per head and per Litre of milk has been estimated to Rs. 60.26 and Rs. 10.80, respectively.

  • A field study was undertaken to find out the shelter management practices followed by the farmers of Patan district of North Gujarat region. Five talukas were randomly selected for the study viz., Patan, Sidhpur, Chanasma, Harij and Santalpur. Three villages were selected from each taluka and from each village 10 respondents who reared buffalo either alone or mixed with cattle were selected by using a multistage random sampling technique. The analyses revealed that majority (58.00%) of the respondents were from the old age group (above 45 yrs.).

  • A field survey was conducted in and around R.S. Pura tehsil of Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir, India and data was collected from 120 respondents belonging to Gujjar community through specially designed questionnaire by random sampling method. The study revealed that majority of farmers fed concentrate and roughages to their animals and depend on bore wells as a source of drinking water to their buffaloes. About 63.34% respondents fed colostrum within 1h of birth of calves followed by 25.83% fed between 1- 3h and 13% fed after 3h of birth of calves.

  • The present study was conducted to know the selective breeding, feeding and management practices followed by dairy farmers in Punjab. A total of 150 farmers were selected randomly and divided into three categories, small (n=48), medium (n=74) and large (n=28). With help of well-structured interview schedule and pretested questionnaire data were collected w.r.t. breeding, feeding and management practices being followed.   • Farmers frequently approach practicing veterinarians for the treatment of cows or buffaloes producing milk which is reddish or pinkish due to the presence of blood in postpartum dairy cows. Farmers suffer from the economic loss because bloody milk is often rejected by the consumers. A HF cross bred cow calved 2 days back showed blood in milk. All the five cows treated successfully with progesterone (Hyprogen), Etamsylate and homeopathic medicine such as curry leaf and lemon extract.

  • The study was conducted in Junagadh and Porbandar districts of Gujarat to compare breeding, calf and health management practices opted by buffalo owners (n=300). Majority of farmers practiced natural service (59%), late heat for insemination (76.34%), pregnancy diagnosis (90%) and treatment of anoestrous/repeaters buffaloes (90.33%). Most of respondents attended calving and took care of calves after parturition (98%) and cleaned calves (93.67%). However, few farmers practiced ligation/ cutting and disinfection of navel cord (14.33%) and feeding colostrum to calf (33.33%).

  • A semi structured questionnaire based field survey was conducted to assess the socioeconomic factors, responsible for the buffalo rearing in the 11 villages of Chaka block of Allahabad. The recent study was performed on the respondents of different age group, gender, education status, factors and other characteristics that include breeds, rearing and housing strategies of the various buffalo in these different villages of Chaka region.
