Buffaloes producing milk

This paper has focused into the structural changes of milk production in Uttar Pradesh. The state is highest milk producer of India with the change in production from 14.648 million tonnes in 2001-02 to 25.198 million tonnes in 2014-15. Growth rate of milk production in the state was found 4.27 per cent per annum and the per capita availability of milk grew at the rate of 2.39 per cent per year. Population of different milch animals has increased from the year 2003-07 to 2007-12. There is large percentage increase in cross-bred population of cattle i.e. 109.

A total of 18 Murrah buffaloes of 1st to 3 rd parity were selected to study the effect of Body Condition Score (BCS) in milk production, milk composition and reproductive performance of lactating Murrah buffaloes. The Murrah buffaloes were distributed into three different groups with six animals in each group based on their pre-calving BCS (15 days before expected date of calving) namely G1 (2.50 - 3.00), G2 (3.25 - 3.75) and G3 (4.00 and above).

Studies on influence of peripartum nutritional supplementation on uterine involution and postpartum fertility are meager in Jaffarabadi buffaloes. Hence this investigation was undertaken at Cattle Breeding Farm, JAU, Junagadh on 40 advanced pregnant Jaffarabadi buffaloes of 2-4 parity. The animals were divided into two equal groups, viz., control and treatment groups.

Fertility augmentation approaches Fertility is one of the key determinants of the life time reproductive performance of the dairy cattle (Bos taurus and Bos indicus) and riverine buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) which is reflected by its genotype, physiological condition, nutrition and management. It is assessed by the ability of a dairy cow to produce one calf per year. Fertility in riverine buffalo is considerably lower than in cattle.

The mammary gland develops through several distinct stages. The first transpires in the embryo as the ectoderm forms a mammary line that resolves into placodes which leads to various stages like mammary bud, primary sprout, secondary and tertiary sprouts. Simultaneously the connective tissue whorls, fat pad, teat and gland sinus and other associated structures like sweat and sebaceous glands are also developed. Regulated by epithelial/mesenchymal interactions, the placodes descend into the underlying mesenchyme and produce the ductal structure of the gland present at birth.

Farmers frequently approach practicing veterinarians for the treatment of cows or buffaloes producing milk which is reddish or pinkish due to the presence of blood in postpartum dairy cows. Farmers suffer from the economic loss because bloody milk is often rejected by the consumers. A HF cross bred cow calved 2 days back showed blood in milk. All the five cows treated successfully with progesterone (Hyprogen), Etamsylate and homeopathic medicine such as curry leaf and lemon extract.

Nagpuri buffalo is native to Nagpur region of Maharashtra.The Nagpuri buffaloes are moderately good milk producers. Their milk is of very good quality containing around 7.7 percent of fat. Most of the people especially children depend on local vendors for buffalo milk. Alteration in physicochemical /microbiological parameters has direct impact on the quality of milk. Growing evidence those foods borne pathogen directly or indirectly causes or predispose man to chronic diseases.
