Studies were carried out on the trace metal contamination of Sarotherodon melanotheron from Alaro stream in Ibadan, Nigeria. Fish were collected between January and December 2003 (Dry and rainy season).Muscle, liver, bone, gills, gut and fins were analyzed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) using the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).

A new PGNAA facility has been installed at horizontal channel No.4 of the Dalat research reactor. The facility consists of the following parts: collimators, beam stopper, sample holder table, beam catcher, and biological shielding. The construction takes into account the basic parameters associated with the facility, such as adequate thermal neutron flux and cadmium ratio, good signal-to-background condition, small gamma-ray contamination in the beam and appropriately low dose-rate to the operating personnel.

The application of non-targeted NMR methods combined with ICP-AES quantification provided an efficient strategy for detecting residual heavy metals within plant tissues and soil. Importantly, non-targeted metabolomic analysis helped to reveal the relationships between metabolites distribution in hemp tissues and the sequestered metals.

Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) analysis was used to evaluate the univariate contaminant exposure effect as well as the contaminant mixture effects on levels of thyroid hormones. Significant and positive associations were found between total T3 and PC-2 (high positive nickel and cadmium loadings), total T3 and PC-3 (negative association with negative loading for nickel and positive loading for cadmium) and TSH and PC-1 (high positive loadings for organic contaminants).

Haliaeetus albicilla is a top raptor that can be used as a model for contaminants transfer in trophic chain. In this study we studied the accumulation of three contaminants on feathers from breeding individuals of white-tailed sea-eagle collected between 2012 and 2018 in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and its surroundings. The concentrations of two heavy metals (chromium, cadmium) and one metalloid (arsenic) were determined by inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Chromium concentrations ranged from 0.32 to 1.33 mg/kg for juveniles and between 0.68 to 2.

Cadmium (Cd) is a serious heavy metal (HM) soil pollutant. To alleviate or even eliminate HM pollution in soil, environmental-friendly methods are applied. One is that special plants are cultivated to absorb the HM in the contaminated soil.

Heavy metal contamination is among the globally environmental and ecological concerns. In this study we assessed the development of the two green algae Schroederia setigera and Selenastrum bibraianum under exposures to 5 - 200 µg/L of Ni, Zn, and Cd in the laboratory conditions. Heavy metal removal efficiency of S. setigera was also tested in 537 µg Ni/L, 734 µg Zn/L, and 858 µg Cd/L. We found that the exposures with these heavy metals caused inhibitory on the growth of S. bibraianum.

Persistent heavy metal pollution poses a major threat to all life forms in the environment due to its toxic effects. These metals are very reactive at low concentrations and can accumulate in the food web, causing severe public health concerns. The use of microbial biosorbents is eco-friendly and cost effective; hence, it is an efficient alternative for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated environments.

Pulse crops are an integral part of Indian agricultural economy next to the cereals and oilseeds in terms of production, productivity and economic value. These crops are richest source of protein and energy but in India such crops are largely cultivated under energy starved and polluted conditions, resulting affecting the metabolic activity and limiting the yield. Agricultural soil contaminated by heavy metals becomes a severe environmental issue in this day due to its potential adverse ecological effects.

This study aims to understand the concentrations of selected heavy metals including arsenic, iron, manganese, cadmium and mercury in groundwater used for domestic purposes in Dak Nong Province of Viet Nam. A total number of 572 groundwater samples including 61 duplicates were collected during October, 2018 – April, 2019. The collected samples were measured onsite for pH and preserved with 2 % HNO3 until pH < 2 before being analyzed in the laboratory for heavy metals by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

The present study reports the feasibility of reclamation of a lead and cadmium contaminated soil using the solution containing organic carbon resulting from the decomposition of organic matter, an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective leachate. For conducting this experiment, three soil samples were used. Column leaching experiments were performed to test the efficiency of organic solution containing two rates of organic carbon (0.25 g/L and 0.50 g/L) for the reclamation of the lead and cadmium contaminated soil in natural conditions.

The combination treatments lime and cocopeat had the lowest Cd contaminations compared to other treatments. The average levels of Cd in the peanut body and nut were 81.0 µg/kg and 27 µg/kg respectively. It can be concluded that liming combined with cocopeat can be the most suitable treatment for reducing Cd contamination in peanut cultivation.

The objective of the study is to reveal the seasonal variations in the wastewater quality with respect to heavy metal contamination. To get the extent of the heavy metals contamination, wastewater samples were collected from 5 different locations from in and around river Narmada during the Winter, Summer, Monsoon Rainy and Post- Monsoon seasons. The concentration of heavy metals, such as lead, copper, manganese, zinc, cadmium, irons and chromium were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS).

Rhizoremediation is an in-situ remediation approach involving microorganisms for the biodegradation of organic pollutants and various other contaminants in the root zone. Plant roots provide a rich niche for the microorganisms to grow at the expense of the root exudates and in turn microbes act as biocatalysts to remove the pollutants. The harmful pollutants such as: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)- pesticides, herbicides etc. are converted to degradable compounds, while heavy metals such as zinc, copper, lead, tin, cadmium etc.
