  • The genetic determinism of the calving and suckling performance of beef cows is little known whereas these maternal traits are of major economic importance in beef cattle production systems. This paper aims to identify QTL regions and candidate genes that affect maternal performance traits in the Blonde d’Aquitaine breed.

  • Female fertility is an important trait in cattle breeding programs. In the Nordic countries selection is based on a fertility index (FTI). The fertility index is a weighted combination of four female fertility traits estimated breeding values for number of inseminations per conception (AIS), 56-day non-return rate (NRR), number of days from first to last insemination (IFL), and number of days between calving and first insemination (ICF).

  • Understanding the underlying pleiotropic relationships among quantitative traits is necessary in order to predict correlated responses to artificial selection. The availability of large-scale next-generation sequence data in cattle has provided an opportunity to examine whether pleiotropy is responsible for overlapping QTL in multiple economic traits.

  • The Nordic Red Cattle (NRC) consists of animls belonging to the Danish Red, Finnish Ayrshire, and Swedish Red breeds. Compared to the Holstein breed, NRC animals are smaller, have a shorter calving interval, lower mastitis incidence and lower rates of stillborn calves, however they produce less milk, fat and protein.

  • Metabolic profile evaluation is a tool widely used in ruminant nutrition as metabolic cues that relate nutrition to physiology. Metabolic and hormonal traits change during pre-partum and lactation according to parity in dairy cows, but studies of beef cows under grazing are scarce.

  • The detection of quantitative trait loci has accelerated with recent developments in genomics. The introduction of genomic selection in combination with sequencing efforts has made a large amount of genotypic data available. Functional traits such as fertility and calving traits have been included in routine genomic estimation of breeding values making large quantities of phenotypic data available for these traits. This data was used to investigate the genetics underlying fertility and calving traits and to identify potentially causative genomic regions and variants.

  • The present study on Murrah buffaloes was conducted at Cattle and Buffalo Farm (Livestock Production and Management Section), ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute. Reproductive data pertaining to post partum interval to estrus (PPIE), service period (SP), number of services per conception (NoS/C) and breeding efficiency (BE) were recorded and analysed to examine the effects of pre-partum body condition score, lactation order, age at calving, season of calving, body weight at calving and dry period on various reproductive traits.

  • he present investigation was conducted to study the effect of various non genetic factors like farm, parity, period of calving and season of calving on different production traits like total lactation milk yield (TLMY), 305 day milk yield (305MY), peak yield (PY), milk yield per day of lactation length (MY/LL) and milk yield per day of calving interval (MY/CI) in Murrah buffaloes. The data analysed include records of 2959 buffaloes, progeny of 219 sires maintained over a period of 24 years (1992-2015) at Buffalo research centre (BRC), LUVAS, Hisar and Animal farm ICAR-CIRB, Hisar.

  • Dietary nutrients not only affect productive and reproductive performance but also milk composition traits like milk protein and milk lactose. This study was conducted to observe effect of copper and zinc feeding on milk protein and milk lactose when these are fed in pre and post partum stage to kankrej cows. Twenty Kankrej pregnant cows (five in each group) at 30 days before the expected date of calving were used to present study and grouped into four groups (five in each group) as control, copper supplemented, zinc supplemented and supplemented with both elements.

  • The research data spread over a period of 41 years (1974 to 2015) were utilized to study the heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlation of life time performance traits. The mixed model analysing using LSML were used for estimation of variance components considering sire as a random effect, season and period of birth and age at first calving groups as fixed effects. Period of birth was highly significant on LTMY3, LTMY4, ALTMY, HL and PL whereas non-significant on BE. Season of birth did not influence any of the trait considered in the study.

  • Reproductive traits describe the animal’s ability to conceive, calve down and suckle the calf to weaning successfully (Davis 1993). These traits are important since they affect the herd size and off take. Reproductive performance is commonly evaluated by analysing female reproductive traits. The traits regularly considered include age at first calving, calving interval and calving rate. Male fertility traits are rarely included in genetic evaluations despite their influence on the female reproductive performance. These traits include semen quality and quantity traits and scrotal size.
