The Nagarjuna Sagar Project is one of the prestigious projects in India and it irrigates nearly 9 lakhs ha area .The canal is divided into 9 branch canals spread across Guntur and Prakasam districts. The month wise and branch wise discharge data and hydraulic particulars of main and branch canal was collected from Water Resources Department, Lingamguntla circle and Ongole circle.

Agriculture is the base to all strategies for planned socio-economic development of most of the countries. Studies have shown that 40% of food production is achieved from 17% of the irrigated areas in the world. As it is not possible to expand agricultural area and possibility of increasing production per unit area of available land and water resources are minimal, it is the need of time that surface and groundwater should be used in conjunction for optimal utilization of water resources.

An Investigation on physico-chemical properties, NPK and micro nutrient status of soils of Janpad major, Left bank canal, Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP), Telangana, India was carried. The soils are having clay content ranging from 6 to 24 per cent, silt content from 4 to 20 per cent and sand content from 69 to 87 per cent. The Hydraulic conductivity varied from 15 to 20 cm day-1 with a mean value of 17.5 cm day-1 . Mostly the soils under the command area are slightly acidic to slightly alkaline and non-saline in nature.

An investigation was conducted from November 2015 to May 2017 at Shahapur and Shorapur taluk, Yadgir district, to accuracy assessment of supervised and unsupervised classification for land use land cover using Landsat-8 imagery of D-7 Shahapur branch canal of UKP command area, Karnataka. Accuracy assessment of supervised land classification for post and pre-monsoon was carried out for the study period and the values are presented in Table 5 to 8. The technique used for this was called error of confusion matrix. The overall accuracy for both post and pre-monsoon ranged from 86.

A huge amount has been invested on irrigation project but these project are not achieving the target most of these hence the very low water productivity ranging wet been 0.52-0.72 kg/m3 and 30-50 irrigation efficiency lining of the canal and transpiring the management to WUA also could not result in this scenario.

This paper reflects the use of newer technologies Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) which play important role in monitoring canal water distribution and its management, cropping pattern identification and geomorphology characterisation of command area. The conjunctive use of surface and groundwater resources aims to harness maximum quantity of water to achieve optimal utilization of total water resources in a canal command area for maximum agricultural productivity.

Almatti Left Bank Canal from Upper Krishna Project command area of the Karnataka state was selected for the purpose of analysing the changes in cropping pattern. The time series data on cropping pattern in selected canal command area were collected for a period of 10 years (2009-10 to 2018-19) and analysed using First Order Markov Chain Approach. In Almatti Left Bank Canal command area, maize crop was grown for fodder purpose while sunflower fetched high price and pearl millet was the main food in the command area. Hence, area under these crops remained stable.
