Despite lower cancer incidence rates, cancer mortality is higher among rural compared to urban dwellers. Patient, provider, and institutional level factors contribute to these disparities. The overarching objective of this study is to leverage the multidisciplinary, multispecialty oncology team from an academic cancer center in order to provide comprehensive cancer care at both the patient and provider levels in rural healthcare centers.

Improvement of the initial management of sarcomas after the dissemination of evidence-based guidelines depends on the primary sarcoma location: a population-based study. To improve the initial management of adult sarcomas, a regional expert team in Northern France performed two actions: dissemination of evidence-based guidelines (EBG) for the management of soft tissue/visceral sarcoma and yearly educational symposia.

MDT (multidisciplinary team) meetings are considered an essential component of care for patients with cancer. However there is remarkably little direct evidence that such meetings improve outcomes. We assessed whether or not MDT (multidisciplinary team) processes influenced survival in a cohort of patients with colorectal cancer.

Cancer is the leading cause of death among women aged 35 to 54. As childbearing among older parturients increases, so likely will the incidence of cancer in pregnancy. Currently, cancer complicates one in 1000 pregnancies. The management of pregnant women with cancer presents a major challenge to the care-giving team: the risks and benefits of treatment (and withholding treatment) must be weighed for both the mother and the fetus.

Support groups also can help. In these groups, patients or their family members meet with other patients or their families to share what they have learned about coping with the disease and the effects of treatment. Groups may offer support in person, over the telephone, or on the Internet. You may want to talk with a member of your health care team about finding a support group. Because cancer treatments often damage healthy cells and tissues, side effects are common. Side effects depend mainly on the type and extent of the treatment. Side effects may not be the same for each woman, and they may change from one treatment session to the next. Before treatment starts, your health care team will explain possible side effects and suggest ways to help you manage them. ...

The patient journey from presentation to the general practitioner (GP), referral for investigation, through to diagnosis and specialist referral is a multistep process. The effective management of patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer requires a multidisciplinary approach. The investigation and management of each new patient requires access to a multidisciplinary team consisting of surgeons, gastroenterologists, endoscopists, oncologists, nurses, dietitians, radiologists, pathologists, and anaesthetists.
