Ebook "Prominin-1 (CD133): New insights on stem & cancer stem cell biology" was conceived to celebrate the fi fteenth anniversary of the discovery of prominin-1, also known in the medical fi eld as CD133. This book is composed of 15 chapters that will describe, on one hand, the molecular and cellular biology of prominin-1 and other members of the prominin family and, on the other hand, the importance of this molecule in the medical fi eld as a valuable marker of stem and cancer stem cells.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the deadliest cancers worldwide. Overexpres‑ sion of EMT master transcription factors can promote differentiated cells to undergo cancer reprogramming processes and acquire a stem cell-like status.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors, including PD-L1 (programmed death ligand-1) inhibitors have well documented anticancer therapeutic effects in most types of cancers but its use in the treatment of ovarian cancer is not yet proven. The aim of our study is to explore the predictive biomarkers in ovarian cancer and its association with the outcomes.

Emerging proof shows that abnormal lipometabolism affects invasion, metastasis, stemness and tumor microenvironment in carcinoma cells. However, molecular markers related to lipometabolism have not been further established in breast cancer. In addition, numerous studies have been conducted to screen for prognostic features of breast cancer only with RNA sequencing profiles.

Relapse is a frequent occurrence in autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT), and early relapse after AHSCT results in poor survival and low quality of life. Predictive marker determination for AHSCT outcomes could be helpful in the prevention of relapse through personalized medicine. Here the predictive value of circulatory microRNAs (miRs) expression for AHSCT outcomes was studied.

Tumor resistance is a global challenge for tumor treatment. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are the main population of tumor cells for drug resistance. We have reported that high aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity represents a functional marker for cervical CSCs.

Integrin αvβ3 has been proposed as crucial determinant for tumor sustained progression and a molecular marker for the estimation of tumor angiogenesis. Our study suggested that integrin αvβ3 could efficiently promote lung cancer cell proliferation and stem-like phenotypes in a tribbles homolog 3 (TRIB3) dependent manner.

NOSTRIN, abundantly expressed in colon, was reported to be anti-angiogenic, anti-invasive and anti-inflammatory. NOSTRIN expression was inversely related to survival of pancreatic ductal adeno-carcinoma patients. Yet its function and regulatory mechanism in CRC remains elusive.

Loss of prostate cancer differentiation or de-differentiation leads to an untreatable disease. Patient survival would benefit if this can be prevented or reversed. Cancer de-differentiation transforms luminal-like (differentiated) adenocarcinoma into less luminal-like and more stem-like (undifferentiated) small cell carcinoma through a sequential activation of stem cell transcription factors (scTF) POU5F1, LIN28A, SOX2 and NANOG.

Epigenetic reprogramming plays a crucial role in the tumorigenicity and maintenance of tumor-specific gene expression that especially occurs through DNA methylation and/or histone modifications. It has well-defined mechanisms. It is known that alterations in the DNA methylation pattern and/or the loss of specific histone acetylation/methylation markers are related to several hallmarks of cancer, such as drug resistance, stemness, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and metastasis.

This research is focused on using a rare-earth element, which is the fluorescent Tb3+ nano-ion, and the CD133 monoclonal antibody to create a CSC-targeting nanocomplex (LV3). Tb3+ nanorods were silica-surface treated and -NH2 activated before being conjugated with the monoclonal antibody (mAb) against CD133, a typical CSC surface marker...

Recently reported data have suggested that only a small subset of cancer cells possess the capability to initiate malignancies. These observations were based on investigation of cells within the primary tumors displaying a distinct surface marker pattern. CD133 marker is a putative hematopoietic and neuronal stem cell marker, which is also considered to be a tumorigenic marker in brain, prostate and liver. Recent studies have shown that a small population of CD133-positive cells, indeed, exists in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines and primary HCC tissues.

CD133 has been identified as a putative cancer stem cell marker in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the clinical and prognostic significance of CD133 in CRC remains controversial. Methods: Publications were identified which assessed the clinical or prognostic significance of CD133 in CRC up to October 2012. A meta-analysis was performed to clarify the association between CD133 expression and clinical outcomes.

Sox2, an embryonic stem cell marker, is aberrantly expressed in a subset of breast cancer (BC). While the aberrant expression of Sox2 has been shown to significantly correlate with a number of clinicopathologic parameters in BC, its biological significance in BC is incompletely understood.
