The yield potential as well as quality of chilli is affected by a number of biotic and abiotic stresses. The genetic improvement of this crop, especially for characters like resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses using conventional breeding methods are laborious, time taking and also needs a large experimental area. So, an attempt was made to study callus induction in chilli genotypes by using hypocotyls as explant to complement conventional breeding and expedite capsicum improvement.

Reaction of chilli genotypes against chilli veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV) under glass house condition
Chilli veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV) is an aphid-borne major destructive virus affecting chilli crop. To identify sources of resistance against ChiVMV is essential. In this study, fifty chilli genotypes were screened for ChiVMV resistance through mechanical inoculation in an insect-proof glass house.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of salinity on germination and emergence of chilli cultivars and to investigate the ability for genetic salt tolerance during germination and seedling growth. Although some of the chilli genotypes have salinity tolerance to some extent, more attention is required to assess the cultivars for salinity resistance/tolerance so as to screen them and select best types suitable to cultivate under areas prone to soil salinity.

Chilli (Capsicum annuum L) is one of the most important cum vegetable spice crop grown in India with great export potential. The exoeriment was undertaken to study the variability, genetic correlations and path coefficients of yielding traits in 24 genotypes of chilli. The analysis of variance revealed the significant differences among the genotypes for almost all the characters studied which indicating that presence of great deal of genetic variability for different traits.

For most quantitative traits in crop plants, genotype × environment interaction (GEI) is the rule rather than the exception. The best approach to cope with GEI is to exploit it by identifying genotypes best suited to specific environments so that the productivity in given environment is maximized.

Eleven genotypes of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) were investigated to understand the extent of genetic diversity through 16 growth and yield attributing characters. Genetic diversity in chilli genotypes based on sixteen characters was estimated using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistics. The genotypes were grouped into four different clusters by non-hierarchical clustering. The cluster I had the maximum number (7) of genotypes while cluster III and IV each contained only one genotype. Cluster II and III had highest inter cluster distance (249.759) followed by cluster III and IV (239.433).

Seventy eight bird chilli genotypes were screened against leaf curl virus. Leaf curl disease scoring was done at 30th, 60th and 90th days after planting (DAP) based on visual symptoms of each observational plant. Initial screening was done under field conditions based on vulnerability index score (0 to 4 scale), disease reaction to each genotype was assigned based on Leaf pubescence which can be observed on the youngest mature leaves and it was classified as sparse (3), intermediate (5) and dense (7).
