Incorporation of therapeutic proteins in a matrix of sugar glass is known to enhance protein stability, yet protection is often lost when exposed to high relative humidity (RH). We hypothesized that especially in these conditions the use of binary glasses of a polysaccharide and disaccharide might yield advantages for protein stability.

Small specimens of spruce wood with different degrees of delignification were studied using in-situ tensile tests and simultaneous synchrotron X-ray diffraction to reveal the effect of delignification and densification on their tensile properties at relative humidities of 70–80 %. In addition to mechanical properties, these analyses yield the ratio of strains in the cellulose crystals and in the bulk, which reflects the stress-transfer to crystalline cellulose.

The intestinal microbes in mammals play a key role in host metabolism and adaptation. As a subterranean rodent, zokor digs tunnels for foraging and mating. These digging activities of zokors increase the energy expenditure relative to their aboveground counterparts.

The effect of a combination of a goal-directed fluid protocol and preoperative carbohydrate loading on postoperative complications in elderly patients still remains unknown. Therefore, we designed this trial to evaluate the relative impact of preoperative carbohydrate loading and intraoperative goal-directed fluid therapy versus conventional fluid therapy (CFT) on clinical outcomes in elderly patients following gastrointestinal surgery.

Global trend of the introduction of high levels of relatively cheap carbohydrates to reduce the amount of costly protein in the aquatic animal feed production has affected the aquaculture of an economically important cyprinid fish, blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala). This dietary shift has resulted in increased prevalence of metabolic disorders, often causing economic losses. High dietary intake of carbohydrates, associated with obesity, is one of the major causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in humans.

In the present study crosses from 3 lines and 6 testers evaluated for standard heterosis, heterobeltiosis and relative heterosis for fresh root yield, dry root yield, root length, root girth, fiber content, carbohydrate content,50% flowering and secondary roots (Fig. 1). The heterosis is presented in Table 1.

The investigation was conducted on three mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] genotypes namely MH-421, MH-318 and Basanti genotypes to study their biochemical, and yield response in relation to terminal heat stress tolerance. The plants were raised in earthen pots (30 cm diameter) filled with 5.5 kg of dune sand (Typic Torrispamments) under screen house conditions. High temperature stress was given by manipulation of sowing dates i.e. normal sown (12th March, 2013) and late sown (29th March, 2013).

The global food and nutritional security of growing population is a great challenge. Mushrooms provide a rich addition to the diet in the form of protein (12-35%), carbohydrates (26-82%), valuable salts, minerals and phenols. They are also good source of vitamins especially those of B complex group but are relatively poor in fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K. Among B complex vitamins, mushrooms are especially rich in thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin and biotin. The present investigation is biochemical analysis through the modified methods in milky mushroom strains.

Among abiotic stresses drought is one of the most important limiting factor that adversely affect the plant production in the majority of agricultural crops of the world. Presently exogenous application of cytokinins i.e., Kinetin (@ 10, 20 and 40 mg/L) and Benzyl adenine(@ 25 and 50 mg/L) was studied on plant Relative leaf water content (RLWC), Water saturation deficit (WSD), relative saturation deficit (RSD) and carbohydrate metabolism (total soluble sugars and starch) content of wheat cultivars under water deficit conditions.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and alterations in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolisms. Diabetes is associated with absolute or relative deficiencies in insulin secretion by pancreatic β-cells and/or insulin action. For the treatment of diabetes large numbers of herbal preparations are in vogue. Plant cells produced secondary metabolites which are biologically active constituents with therapeutic and prophylactic applications in humans.

Starch is the most abundant carbohydrate from the plant source. In different food processing sectors starch plays a vital role, includes thickening, gelling, consistency and shelf stability in various food applications. Irradiation plays an important role on the starch modification, it improves the viscosity of starch and plays a key role in the pasting properties. Irradiation dose was positively correlated to solubility and negatively correlated with relative crystallinity, thermal properties, and pasting properties.

Responses of 4 cultivars of rice viz. NDR-8002, TCA-48, IR-42 and BPT 5204 to varying levels of moisture deficit stress at flowering stage were assessed in the plastic tubs for their relative tolerance to drought. Moisture deficit adversely affected the apparent translocation rate, relative leaf water content, total chlorophyll content and total soluble carbohydrate content, while proline accumulation enhanced irrespective of varieties. Grain yield decreased conspicuously in all the varieties in response to water stress.

In order to contribute to the valorization of non-timber products from the Congo, the aim of the study was to contribute to the nutritional value of P. aquilinum fern. The harvested fern plants were previously dried by solar drying for up to 4 hours and finally crushed to obtain a powder after sieving. This powder made it possible to study the biochemical and physicochemical characteristics of fronds. The results of the biochemical analysis revealed moisture contents of 13.87 ± 0.17%; the ash content of 9.25 ± 0.49%; lipid content 7.07 ± 0.41%, and that of soluble sugars 0.54 ± 0.021.

Effect of water deficiency on seed quality and physiological traits of different safflower genotypes
Safflower is one of the most adapted oilseed crops to the drought-prone arid lands. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of water deficiency on some physiological traits such as proline content, soluble carbohydrate content, relative water content (RWC), and seed quality using 64 safflower genotypes grown under normal and water-deficient field conditions.

This study examined the influence of drought stress during the flowering stage of 2 canola cultivars on some physiological characteristics, antioxidant activities, and gene expression of antioxidant enzymes. Significant differences were observed among interactions of cultivars and levels of drought stress in total shoot dry material, relative water content percentage, proline, carbohydrates, gene expression, and activities of antioxidant enzymes.

This short design guide on food technology rooms in secondary schools has been produced to help schools plan and deliver these facilities. It is based on Building Bulletin 811 , updating the information relating to food. The guidance is intended mainly for schools, designers and local authorities, particularly those involved in Building Schools for the Future (BSF). It covers all aspects of planning and designing successful food technology rooms to ensure suitable spaces for delivering each school’s requirements.

For many years, under the definition of Communication for Development, FAO has emphasized the critical role that participatory communication plays in involving communities in rural development. Such a commitment to genuine participation requires openness to the different ways of understanding and resolving problems that emerge from the cultural, economic and agroecological realities of the communities involved.
