  • The aim of this Master of Engineering (MEng) - Aerospace thesis is to study the structural response and failure of aerospace grade composites during exposure to fire. Key aspects of the research are to analyse the thermal and mechanical responses of laminates and sandwich composites in high temperature and fire environments, which result in softening and structural failure. The research is concentrated on carbon/epoxy laminates and sandwich composites, which are the most common composite materials used in aerospace structures.

  • The rate constants and the activation energies of the reaction between carbon dioxide and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) in 1-propanol solution were measured by a stopped-flow technique at a temperature range of 288–308 K and at a TMG concentration range of 2.5–10.0 wt %. Based on the pseudo-first-order reaction for CO2 , the reaction was modeled by a termolecular reaction mechanism, which resulted in a rate constant of 199.30 m 3 kmol −1 s −1 at 298 K. The activation energies were 5.19 kJ/mol and 5.26 kJ/mol at 2.5 and 5.0 wt % TMG, respectively.

  • Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was performed on tamoxifen (tam) using different electrodes and in various acidic electrolytes containing 10% v v−1 methanol (MeOH). Tam oxidation was found to be most favorable using 0.1 mol L−1 H2SO4. To investigate the mechanism, we performed chronoamperometry, CV at different scan rates, differential pulse anodic voltammetry (DPAV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on tam-covered glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs).   • Disposal of contaminated wastewater causes many serious problems especially when it gets mixed with the ground and seawater. It is, therefore, important to apply any remedial action to eradicate dangerous pollutants from the aqueous effluents and to avoid exposure of this wastewater to aquatic life.   • The calcium looping process, based on the reversible reaction between CaCO3 and CaO, is recently attracting a great deal of interest as a promising thermochemical energy storage system to be integrated in Concentrated Solar Power plants (CaL-CSP). There have been many studies of thermal conductivity for single phase fluids containing CNTs; however, most commercial coolants are two-phase fluids, such as the mixture of ethylene glycol and water (E/W).
