  • High energy demand driven by decreasing fossil fuels, and global warming because of the burning of fossil fuels necessitates the utilization of renewable and clean energy. One of these renewable energy sources is biodiesel. The increasing trend of biodiesel over the last 20 years tends to result in increasing glycerol (Gly), which is produced during the biodiesel production in 10% ratio (w/w) as a by-product. Using Gly as raw material is an alternative way to produce bio-based new products such as glycerol carbonate (GlyC).

  • Activated carbon (AC), a porous material with high pore volume, attracts increasing attention owing to its potential applications in several fields. The development of a porous structure in AC marginally relies on both the treatment methods and the type of precursor. Thus far, both renewable and nonrenewable precursor sources have been used to synthesize AC with high surface area and pore volume. This study presents the synthesis of AC via physicochemical treatment of waste oil fly ash (OFA), a waste material produced from power plants.

  • This study analyzed Baker‟s yeast efficiency based upon its ability of growth on various agro-industrial wastes that act as the carbon source with an addition of nitrogen supplement at various growth parameters. Various locally available carbon sources including molasses, fruit bagasse juice, sugarcane bagasse juice and whey were used with inorganic as well as organic supplementation of corn steep liquor at a concentration of 50g/L. Increased productivity in case of the lab isolate was observed upon the use of organic supplementation @16.16%.

  • An experiment was carried out to isolate, characterize and screening of Azospirillum from tuberose rhizoplane. 40 bacterial strains were isolated showing characteristics of Azospirillum. Isolates were characterized based on utilization of glucose, biotin requirement, acid production in glucose peptone broth and denitrification test. Out of 40 isolates, 20 isolates required biotin for their growth and remaining 20 showed growth without biotin. 16 isolates showed positive for denitrification and they were tentatively identified as Azospirillum brasilense.

  • Biogas is a carbon neutral, sustainable and renewable source of energy that can be produced and consumed without any adverse effect on the environment. Biogas has the potential to cater to the needs for cooking, basic fuel, electricity and can be upgraded to biomethane which then used as transportation fuel as well. The utilization of biogas as a fuel for thermal and engine applications and spent slurry as an organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizers contributes in reduction of greenhouse gas emission in both energy and agriculture sector.
