Cardiac glycoside

Two studies have reported statistically significant associations between the use of cardiac glycosides (CGs) and an increased risk of lung cancer. However, these studies had a number of methodological limitations. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess this association in a large population-based cohort of patients.

Vernonia amygdalina Delile is a shrub or small tree that is mainly grown in tropical areas of Africa. In Africa, it can be used as a traditional treatment for diabetes, emesis, nausea, dermatitis, arthristis, ascariasis, stomached, anaemia, jaundice, pneumonia, fever, tonsillitis and anti-inflammatory. The studies of the chemical components have shown that V. amygdalina contains steroids, terpenoids, saponins, polyphenolics, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinone and coumarins.

The haematological studies on ethanolic leaf extract of Loranthus Bengwensis were evaluated in streptozotocin induced diabetics albino rats. The phytochemical screening of the ethanolic leaf extract showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, tannin, saponins, cardiac glycosides, phenolics, terpenoid and quinines.

Cardiac glycosides are natural compounds used for the treatment of congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. Recently, they have been reported to exhibit anticancer activity. Proscillaridin A (PSN-A), a cardiac glycoside constituent of Urginea maritima has been shown to exhibit anticancer activity. However, the cellular targets and anticancer mechanism of PSN-A in various cancers including prostate cancer remain largely unexplored.

This study focused on the screening of leaves and tubers of Tacca leontopetaloides (L.) Kuntze collected from different locations for the presence of secondary metabolites and to determine the extent of the environment on these constituents. The study showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins and tannins in the leaf of T. leontopetaloides while only alkaloids were present in the tubers. Variations in the presence of alkaloids and cardiac glycosides in the leaf and tuber samples of the plant were observed.

The aldo-keto reductase (AKR) superfamily comprises proteins that catalyse mainly the reduction of carbonyl groups or carbon–carbon double bonds of a wide variety of substrates including steroids. Such types of reactions have been proposed to occur in the biosynthetic pathway of the cardiac glycosides produced by Digitalis plants. Two cDNAs encoding leaf-specific AKR proteins (DpAR1 and DpAR2) were isolated from a D. purpurea cDNA library using the rat D4-3-ketosteroid 5b-reductase clone.

Introduction: Oleander (Nerium oleander and Nerium indicum) is a relatively small evergreen tree of an Indian origin, and growing in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa islands in Japan. The plant contains cardiac glycosides in its leaves, stems and flowers and is known as one of poisonous plants; poisoning and fatal cases for domestic animals and humans due to ingestion of this plant were reported [1–6]. The main toxin of oleander is oleandrin. Oleandrin can be measured using cross-reaction of an immunoassay kit for digoxin [1], TLC [2], HPLC [7, 8] and LC/MS [3, 6].
