Ebook "Blood pressure and arterial wall mechanics in cardiovascular diseases" are related to blood pressure involving two different and complementary aspects: the role of arterial wall mechanics and the underlying mechanisms of risk involving left ventricular hypertrophy and the role of dietary salt excess on the development of cardiac and renal failure through structural and functional impairment.

Adrenergic overstimulation in long term can lead to a hyperdynamic myocardium and give rise to hypertrophy and ultimately to heart failure. Amphetamine use is a common cause of neurohormonal activation, which gives rise to such adverse cardiovascular events.

McCune–Albright syndrome is a complex disorder encompassing multiple endocrinopathies. These manifestations are secondary to a mutation in the stimulatory G-protein alpha subunit. Cushing syndrome is due to autonomous secretory function of the adrenal gland and is present in 7.1% of patients with McCune–Albright syndrome.

Echocardiography is commonly used for assessing cardiac structure and function in various species including non-human primates. A few previous studies reported normal echocardiographic reference intervals of clinically healthy rhesus macaques under sedation.

Little is known about the impact of trans-acting genetic variation on the rates with which proteins are synthesized by ribosomes. Here, we investigate the influence of such distant genetic loci on the efficiency of mRNA translation and define their contribution to the development of complex disease phenotypes within a panel of rat recombinant inbred lines.

Aberrant expression of various miRNA species has been implicated in numerous cardiac diseases, e.g., heart failure, hypertrophy, conduction disturbances, and arrhythmogenesis. The aim of this study was to determine whether miR-1, miR-133a, and miR-133b can serve as biomarkers in the diagnosis of ventricular (Va) and supraventricular (SVa) arrhythmias in pediatric patients.

Cardiac hypertrophy (CH), leading to cardiac failure is due to chronic metabolic alterations occurring during cellular stress. Besides the already known relationship between oxidative stress and CH, there are implications of reductive stress leading to CH. This study attempted to develop reductive stress-based CH rat model using n-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a glutathione agonist that was compared with typical isoproterenol (ISO) induced CH model.

Surgical stress, liberation of cytokines associated with re-perfusion injury, and long standing use of immune suppressive medications in children recipients of orthotopic living related liver transplantation (OLRLT) pose cardiovascular risk. Reported cardiovascular adverse effects vary from left ventricular wall thickening, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy to resting ECG abnormalities, asymptomatic ST depression following increased heart rate and ventricular arrhythmias. Twenty-five consecutive children recipients of OLRLT were assessed by conventional 2-D, M-mode echocardiography and Doppler.

Cardiac hypertrophy is an independent predictor of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. To identify the mechanisms by which simvastatin inhibits cardiac hypertrophy induced by pressure overload, we determined effects of simvastatin on 14-3-3 protein expression and autophagic activity.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the most common form of non-ischemic cardiomyopathy. It is characterized by ventricular chamber dilation, and myocyte hypertrophy. Human tumorous imaginal disc 1 (Tid1), a chaperone protein and response to regulate number of signaling molecules in the mitochondria or cytosol.

While cardiac hypertrophy elicited by pathological stimuli eventually leads to cardiac dysfunction, exercise-induced hypertrophy does not. This sug-gests that a beneficial hypertrophic phenotype exists. In search of an under-lying molecular substrate we used microarray technology to identify cardiac gene expression in response to exercise. Rats exercised for seven weeks on a treadmill were characterized by invasive blood pressure mea-surements and echocardiography.

Students conduct mechanistic and translational research on: the causes of breast, liver, lung and prostate cancer, inflammatory processes in cardiomyopathy, signal pathway disruption in cardiac hypertrophy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), autoimmunity, neurodevelopmental disorders and identification of pathways of toxicity. Seminars, journal clubs and research retreats are an integral part of the student experience.
