Ebook "TASER® conducted electrical weapons: Physiology, pathology, and law" are rapidly replacing the club for law-enforcement control of violent subjects within many countries around the globe. A TASER CEW is a hand-held device that delivers a 400-volt pulse with a duration tuned to control the skeletal muscles without affecting the heart at a distance of up to 6.5 meters over tiny wires. If necessary, it begins with an arcing voltage of 50,000 V to penetrate thick clothing; the 50,000 V is never delivered to the body itself.

Ebook "Ion channels (Topics in medicinal chemistry, Volume 3)" play a vital role in basic physiological functions such as generation of electrical activity in nerves and muscle, control of cardiac excitability, intracellular signaling, hormone secretion, cell proliferation and many other biological processes. Because of their prevalence and the critical role they play in virtually all tissue types and organs, ion channels are also involved in a number of pathophysiological conditions. The aim of this volume is to review recent advances in the field of ion channel related diseases.

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) is used as a standard adjuvant therapy for non-muscle invasive urothelial cancer. Most patients tolerate the treatment well, with mild side effects. Systemic complications are extremely rare, occur due to BCG dissemination and are associated with immunocompromised state and urothelial breach.

Malignant hyperthermia is an extremely dangerous condition that can occur with exposure to volatile inhalant anesthetics and depolarizing muscle relaxants, and that requires immediate intervention. Neurological complications have rarely been reported, with no reports of electroencephalographic abnormalities or encephalopathy.

Experiment data on isolated rat hearts shows that the transient behaviors after switching pacing intervals are very complicated with increasing, decreasing, and rebound of the contraction force. The strength of contraction in the heart muscle is strongly related to intracellular free Ca2+ mediated by an action potential. This behavior can be explained by calcium cycling inside the excitable cardiac myocytes coupled with their action potential.

Amyloid cardiomyopathy is a cardiovascular disease characterized by infiltration of amyloid into the heart muscle and other organs in the body, triggering impaired function of the heart and other organs. There are three main subtypes of amyloidosis including primary or AL amyloidosis, secondary or AA amyloidosis and hereditary or familial amyloidosis.

The calcium sensitizer levosimendan is increasingly used to improve hemodynamics in patients with acutely decompensated heart failure. By binding to cardiac troponin C the conformation of the calcium-troponin C complex is stabilized, which leads to acceleration of actin-myosin crossbrigde formation and increased force generating capacity of muscle fibers.

Reversing a neuromuscular blockade agent with sugammadex is known to lessen postoperative complications by reducing postoperative residual curarization. However, its effects on 90-day mortality are unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effects of sugammadex and neostigmine in terms of 90-day mortality after non-cardiac surgery.

: It has been a long time since researchers have focused on the cytoskeletal proteins’ unconventional functions in the nucleus. Subcellular localization of a protein not only affects its functions but also determines the accessibility for cellular processes. Desmin is a muscle-specific, cytoplasmic intermediate filament protein, the cytoplasmic roles of which are defined. Yet, there is some evidence pointing out nuclear functions for desmin. In silico and wet lab analysis shows that desmin can enter and function in the nucleus.

This review examines DGC remodeling as a common denominator in diseases affecting heart function and health. Dystrophin and the DGC serve as broad cytoskeletal integrators that are critical for maintaining stability of muscle membranes. The presence of pathogenic variants in genes encoding proteins of the DGC can cause absence of the protein and/or alterations in other complex members leading to muscular dystrophies.
