This paper presents the process of formation, development and basic characteristics of Dương Văn Mình phenomenon as a “new way of worship”, “the third way” of a part of the Hmong people in Vietnam today.

The Catholics and Protestants in Vietnam are both familiar and strange to the word “Christianity” because Vietnamese Catholics call themselves as Christians; Vietnamese Protestants consider themselves as Christians. In fact, both Catholics and Protestants are Christian believers. If they are asked what their religions, they will answer that they are Catholics or Protestants so that Christianity becomes strange to them. Historically, Catholicism, Protestantism, the Orthodox Church and Anglican Church were the great parts of Christianity. Later these religions were separated.

Cultural symbols are each race’s moral and spiritual values or those of their belief. The symbols always consist of meanings of things or phenomena. Among cultural symbols of ethnic groups in Tay Nguyen (the Central Highlands) are the noun “ơi Adai”, the Rông house (communal house), gongs, the musical instruments of Tơrưng, Đinh Pă, the drum, gùi (open backpack), the rice ear, gơl column, buffalo lasso, axe blade, patterns of brocatelle, the gourd… The symbols have been acculturated with Catholicism and Protestantism.

Struggles between Catholicism and Protestantism were at the root of a century of war and upheaval in Europe. Nations responded to the instability by giving absolute power to their monarchs. Art, literature, and political thought reflected the anxiety and uncertainty of the era.
