Subfertility is one challenge facing the dairy industry as the average Holstein heifer conception rate (HCR), the proportion of heifers that conceive and maintain a pregnancy per breeding, is estimated at 55–60%. Of the loci associated with HCR, few have been validated in an independent cattle population, limiting their usefulness for selection or furthering our understanding of the mechanisms involved in successful pregnancy.

Dystocia or difficulty in parturition is a commonly seen in cattle and buffaloes among the domestic animals. The condition can occur as result of numerous factors. This condition when it occurs in a heifer, foetomaternal disproportion becomes the main causative factor. Such conditions often need a caesarean section in order to save the life of the dam. The study aimed to evaluate oxidative stress status in cattle breeds of different thermotolerance during different seasons. Ten each of Tharparkar (Bos indicus) and Karan Fries (Bos indicus x Bos taurus) heifers were selected from NDRI herd, Karnal. Animals were maintained under standard managemental practices followed at the farm. Blood samples were aseptically collected from each animal during winter, spring and summer.

The physiological responses, dry matter and water intake of Sahiwal and Karan Fries (Holstein-Friesian X Tharparkar) heifers were monitored under two feeding regimes i.e. feeding regime-1 (NRC, 2001) and feeding regime-2 (15 % higher energy than NRC 2001, by supplementation of molasses). Six each of healthy heifers of Sahiwal and Karan Fries (18-24 month) were selected from ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (ICAR-NDRI), Karnal. Before start of actual experiment, the animals were given 15 days adaptation period on both the feeding regime.

Fertility augmentation approaches Fertility is one of the key determinants of the life time reproductive performance of the dairy cattle (Bos taurus and Bos indicus) and riverine buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) which is reflected by its genotype, physiological condition, nutrition and management. It is assessed by the ability of a dairy cow to produce one calf per year. Fertility in riverine buffalo is considerably lower than in cattle.

Bovine papillomatosis is the viral infection commonly affecting heifers and milch animals. Warts are usually found on the head, neck, shoulders and sensitive parts of body i.e. the vaginal mucosa. The present study was conducted on eight heifers having wart on different parts of body in an organized cattle farm. The major aim of the study was to determine the cure rate of papillomatosis in cattle after four weeks using different treatment regimen i.e. Thuja, Anthiomaline and prepared autogenous vaccine.

The study was undertaken to develop linear regression equations for prediction of body weights of HF crossbred cattle based on body measurements. The study was carried out on 506 HF crossbred cattle of Livestock Research Station, AAU, Anand; Sarsa Heifer Farm – Amul Dairy, Anand; Ode Semen Station – Amul Dairy, Anand. All the data were grouped age wise. Females were grouped into 0-6 M, 6-12 M, 1-2 Y, 2-4 Y, 4-6 Y and ˃6 Y age groups. Simple and multiple linear regression models were formulated using step wise method using SPSS 21.0 software.

According to Coppock (1994) under pastoralist management conditions, age at first calving is about four years of age. At Abernossa ranch in Ethiopia, weight and age at puberty in heifers were found to be about 155 kg and 22 months, respectively. Calving rate under a single-sire mating system was also improved to above 80% (Azage 1989), compared to about 45% under pastoral management conditions (Coppock 1994). These results would therefore indicate the improvement that could be achieved through proper selection scheme and better management....
