Tuberculosis, caused by bacteria in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), is a major global public health burden. Strain-specific genomic diversity in the known lineages of MTBC is an important factor in pathogenesis that may affect virulence, transmissibility, host response and emergence of drug resistance.

Once antibiotic-resistant bacteria become established within the gut microbiota, they can cause infections in the host and be transmitted to other people and the environment. Currently, there are no effective modalities for decreasing or preventing colonization by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Intestinal microbiota restoration can prevent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) recurrences.

Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) Gram-negative bacteria cause nosocomial infections and rapidly acquire antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which makes it a global threat to human health. It also has a comparatively rare hypervirulent phenotype that can lead to severe disease in otherwise healthy individuals.

Biochemical analyses of causative bacteria do not always result in clear identification, and new technologies aimed at improving diagnostic accuracy continue to be developed. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-fight mass spectrometry is a rapid and accurate technique for bacterial identification.

The most common source of pyogenic liver abscess is biliary tract infection. Other less common routes include the spread of bacteria from distant foci. However, direct extension of a perinephric infection focus to the liver is extremely rare.

Mycobacterium malmoense is a species of slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacteria. It causes mostly pulmonary infections or lymphadenitis in children, but is increasingly encountered in isolated tenosynovitis in adults. Diagnosis is often delayed because of the rarity of the condition and the difficulty of culturing the bacteria.

Ebook "Bacterial fish pathogens: Disease of farmed and wild fish" is a comprehensive discussion of the biological aspects of the bacteria which cause disease in farmed and wild fish. Since the 4th edition was published in 2007, there has been an upturn in the application of molecular approaches to taxonomy, diagnosis and vaccine development. New pathogens, e.g. Aeromonas schubertii, have been described.

People living in flood-prone areas are vulnerable to damages caused by annual floods, including changes in water quality. Seasonal flooding alters water quality in many aspects by introducing silt, nutrients, organic compounds, and sometimes bacteria. In this study, 50 household interviews in Quang Thanh commune - Quang Dien district, the floodprone area in Thua Thien Hue province, were conducted to identify the flood characteristics.

Leptospirosis is a common zoonosis, an infectious disease that infects both humans and animals, which is caused by spirochete bacteria from genus Leptospira. Approximately 30% of children in urban Detroit and 16% of adults in Baltimore demonstrated serologic evidence of previous leptospirosis infections. The Detroit study showed correlation between degree of rat infestation and seropositivity rates.

Oils may go rancid and develop an unpleasant odor and flavor if incorrectly stored. The main factors that cause rancidity (in addition to moisture, bacteria and enzymes) are light, heat, air and some types of metals. Rancid oil forms harmful free radicals in the body, which are known to cause cellular damage and have been associated with diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and other conditions.
