YAP and TAZ, the Hippo pathway terminal transcriptional activators, are frequently upregulated in cancers. In tumor cells, they have been mainly associated with increased tumorigenesis controlling different aspects from cell cycle regulation, stemness, or resistance to chemotherapies.

A high expression pattern of minichromosome maintenance 2 (MCM2) has been observed in various cancers. MCM2 is a protein involved in the cell cycle and plays a role in cancer growth and differentiation by binding to six members of the MCM subfamily. The MCM protein family includes MCM2 through MCM7.

The heart is one of the least regenerative organs in the human body; adult cardiac myocytes divide at extremely low frequency. Therefore, meaningful induction of cardiac regeneration requires in-depth understanding of myocyte cell-cycle control. Recent insights into how myocytes can be coaxed into duplicating in vivo might inform emerging therapeutics.

Ebook "Centromeres and kinetochores: Discovering the molecular mechanisms underlying chromosome inheritance" presents the latest advances concerning the regulation of chromosome segregation during cell division by means of centromeres and kinetochores. The authors cover both state-of-the-art techniques and a range of species and model systems, shedding new light on the molecular mechanisms controlling the transmission of genetic material between cell divisions and from parent to offspring.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive mesothelial cell cancer type linked mainly to asbestos inhalation. MM characterizes by rapid progression and resistance to standard therapeutic modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Our previous studies have suggested that tumor cell-derived connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) regulates the proliferation of MM cells as well as the tumor growth in mouse xenograft models.

This study aimed to assess the effects of simulated microgravity (SMG) on senescent human fibroblasts (HFs). The HFs were treated with 150 µM H2O2 in a culture medium for 90 minutes for senescent induction. The senescent HFs were induced SMG for 72 hours by a Gravity simulator, while the control group was treated in the same CO2 incubator.

In a prospective randomized controlled trial, 70 patients undergoing elective thoracoscopic lobectomy were randomly allocated to the HPC group or the control group. Three cycles of 5-min hypoxia and 3-min ventilation applied to the nondependent lung served as the HPC intervention. Hypoxic preconditioning (HPC) may protect multiple organs from various injuries. We hypothesized that HPC would reduce lung injury in patients undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy.

Molecular targeted therapy for non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is restricted due to resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). This study evaluated the efects of dual targeting of MEK and PI3K in human EGFR-TKI resistant NSCLC cell lines.

Resistance to therapeutic agents and the highly toxic side effects of synthetic drugs has spurred new research in the treatment of colon cancer, which has high morbidity and mortality ratios. This study aims to clarify the molecular mechanisms of the anticarcinogenic properties of methanol extract of Viburnum opulus L. (EVO)and its main active compound, trans-p-coumaric acid (p-CA), on human colon cancer cells (DLD-1, HT-29, SW-620, Caco-2) and healthy colon epithelial cells (CCD-18Co).

This study aimed to estimate the effects of simulated microgravity (SMG) on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The 3D clinostat was applied to induce to simulated microgravity on MSC. The results showed that the MSC density in control group was higher than the SMG group. The cell cycle analysis demonstrated that the MSC ratio in G0/G1 phase in SMG group was higher than that of the control group, while the MSC ratio in S phase and G2/M phase in SMG group was lower than those of the control group.

Flagella have been lost in the vegetative phase of the diatom life cycle, but they are still present in male gametes of centric species, thereby representing a hallmark of sexual reproduction. This process, besides maintaining and creating new genetic diversity, in diatoms is also fundamental to restore the maximum cell size following its reduction during vegetative division. Nevertheless, sexual reproduction has been demonstrated in a limited number of diatom species, while our understanding of its different phases and of their genetic control is scarce.

Characterization of the human RFX transcription factor family by regulatory and target gene analysis
Evolutionarily conserved RFX transcription factors (TFs) regulate their target genes through a DNA sequence motif called the X-box. Thereby they regulate cellular specialization and terminal differentiation. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of all the eight human RFX genes (RFX1–8), their spatial and temporal expression profiles, potential upstream regulators and target genes.

The present study investigated how mouse fibroblasts changed under microgravity (SMG) conditions (< 10-3 G) simulated by 3D clinostat. Results showed that SMG condition markedly reduced the proliferation of mouse fibroblasts, significantly reducing the nuclear area and intensity. Compared to the control group, the mouse fibroblasts ratio of the SMG group was higher in the G0/G1 phase but lower in the S phase and G2/M phase...

In the male germ line of Drosophila chromatin remains decondensed and highly transcribed during meiotic prophase until it is rapidly compacted. A large proportion of the cell cycle-regulated histone H3.1 is replaced by H3.3, a histone variant encoded outside the histone repeat cluster and not subject to cell cycle controlled expression.
