Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a fatal malignancy owing to the lack of effective tools to predict overall survival (OS). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in HNSCC occurrence, development, invasion and metastasis, significantly affecting the OS of patients.

The need for detailed description and modeling of cells drives the continuous generation of large and diverse datasets. Unfortunately, there exists no systematic and comprehensive way to organize these datasets and their information. CELDA (Cell: Expression, Localization, Development, Anatomy) is a novel ontology for the association of primary experimental data and derived knowledge to various types of cells of organisms.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) interact with their cognate RNA(s) to form large biomolecular assemblies. They are versatile in their functionality and are involved in a myriad of processes inside the cell. RBPs with similar structural features and common biological functions are grouped together into families and superfamilies.

Cell cultures used in biomedical experiments come in the form of both sample biopsy primary cells, and maintainable immortalised cell lineages. The rise of bioinformatics and high-throughput technologies has led us to the requirement of ontology representation of cell types and cell lines.

A fundamental characteristic of multicellular organisms is the specialization of functional cell types through the process of differentiation. These specialized cell types not only characterize the normal functioning of different organs and tissues, they can also be used as cellular biomarkers of a variety of different disease states and therapeutic/vaccine responses.

Managing and organizing biological knowledge remains a major challenge, due to the complexity of living systems. Recently, systemic representations have been promising in tackling such a challenge at the whole-cell scale. In such representations, the cell is considered as a system composed of interlocked subsystems.

The dysregulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is associated with the development of various diseases. However, little is known about the regulatory function of lncRNAs in peritendinous fibrosis. Therefore, the expression profiles of lncRNAs and mRNAs in normal tendon and fibrotic peritendinous tissues were analyzed in this study using RNA sequencing. In total, 219 lncRNAs and 3403 mRNAs were identified that were differentially expressed between the two sets of tissues.

In this research, “Domain Ontology for Project Knowledge Management” is presented by literature and reliable resource reviews and analysis in three layers: “People”, “Technology” and “Process”. This ontology consists of 115 cells. The layer of “People” has been divided into two subgroups: “Culture” and “Leadership”, in12 cells. The layer of “Technology” has been classified into two subgroups: “Technology Component” and “Application”, which has 72 cells.

Death inducer obliterator protein 1 [DIDO1; also termed DIO-1 and death-associated transcription factor 1 (DATF-1)] is encoded by a gene thus far described only in higher vertebrates. Current gene ontology descriptions for this gene assign its function to an apoptosis-related pro-cess. The protein presents distinct splice variants and is distributed ubiqui-tously.

Our starting point is the question, “Who invented the environment?” Chapter 1 describes how humans’ awareness of their impacts on the environment developed and when and why the concept of the environment was invented. Chapter 2 provides a first definition of environmental literacy and introduces the value that transdisciplinarity can bring to how humans address environmental issues.

The scope of the Translational Medicine Ontology (TMO) is defined by the use case terminology and respective data sources. Each term and corresponding data source was analyzed for its conceptual, representational and reasoning capability as required by the use case requirements. TMO terms were obtained from a lexical analysis of sample research questions from 14 types of users, all of whom were involved in aspects of research, clinical care and or business (Table 2). Terms were formalized as referring to classes, relations or individuals in the OWL ontology.

The antiproliferative effect of the Hsp90 inhibitor 17-AAG (17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin) on human retinal pigment epithelial cells is investigated. Methods: MTT and flow cytometry were used to study the antiproliferative effects of the 17-AAG treatment of ARPE-19 cells. 2D gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and mass spectrometry were applied to detect the altered expression of proteins, which was verified by real-time PCR.
