Ebook "Biotechnology in agriculture and forestry - Volume 59: Transgenic crops IV" deals with cereals, vegetables, root crops, herbs and spices. Section I is an introductory chapter on the impact of plant biotechnology in agriculture. Section II focuses on cereals (rice, wheat, maize, rye, pearl millet, barley, oats), while Section III is directed to vegetable crops (tomato, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, chickpea, common beans and cowpeas, carrot, radish).

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) has been developed into a model genetical system for deciphering architectural evolution, C4 photosynthesis, nutritional properties, abiotic tolerance and bioenergy in cereal grasses because of its advantageous characters with the small genome size, self-fertilization, short growing cycle, small growth stature, efficient genetic transformation and abundant diverse germplasm resources.

Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a cereal crop that possesses the ability to withstand drought, salinity and high temperature stresses. The NAC [NAM (No Apical Meristem), ATAF1 (Arabidopsis thaliana Activation Factor 1), and CUC2 (Cup-shaped Cotyledon)] transcription factor family is one of the largest transcription factor families in plants. NAC family members are known to regulate plant growth and abiotic stress response.

This study was carried out to evaluate viable existence of Bifidobacterium longum BB536 during two weeks refrigeration of fermented goat milk supplemented with inulin and different cereal bran (Sorghum, Barely and Millet). Fermentation mediums were formulated from goat milk supplemented with 10% inulin and different cereal bran (sorghum, barely and millet). Probiotic strain B. longum BB 536 was used as the starter culture for 12h incubation to attain the fermented products.

This study was carried out to explore prebiotic effect of different cereal bran on Bifidobacterium longum BB536 for developing functional. All the bran (sorghum, barely and millet) were ground finely. Fermentation mediums were formulated from goat milk supplemented with 10% inulin and different cereal bran (sorghum, barely and millet). Probiotic strain B. longum BB 536 was used for fermentation.

In the present scenario of climate change, temperature rise leads to reduction in the yield of millets whereas irregular rainfall adds to this reduction with a negative impact. QTL mapping for different drought tolerance genes in millets will be helpful for breeding climate resilient genotypes. Similarly QTLs for significant general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for several yield related traits under stress will also proved to be beneficial for breeding for climate resilience.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an important cereal crop and prone to many diseases out ofwhich, rice blast caused by Pyricularia grisea is of significant economic importance due to its destructive nature leading to serious yield loss. Blast infected leaves of rice, Panicum grass and finger millet were collected from different fields of OUAT farm, Bhubaneswar.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) was a leading cause of infantile diarrhea in many countries. But this bacteria had never research in flours and porridges consume by infant in Côte d‟Ivoire. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of EPEC in maize and millet flours and porridges made traditionally. EPEC were research in 996 samples of traditional cereals products, with 404 flours and 592 porridges. These products were taken in five municipalities of Abidjan. The strains were characterized by detection of virulence factors and phylogenetic method.

Millets, a powerhouse of nutrients, hold great potential in contributing substantially to food and nutritional security of the developing country. They are climate resilient crops and due to their unique nutritional characteristics, they contribute significantly in increasing demand for nutritious food and feed. Recently the government has renamed jowar, bajra, ragi and other millets as “Nutri Cereals”, instead of “coarse cereals”.

The present study was conducted during 2013-14 both in Northern and Southern districts of Karnataka i.e. Dharwad & Tumkur to observe the expenditure pattern of Sthree Shakthi Group members viz., on food, clothing and House Keeping. Three hundred Self Help Group members (120 & 180 SHG members from Dharwad and Tumkur districts respectively)were selected and interviewed using pretested interview schedule. It was noticed that on an average, Dharwad SSG members’ families spent Rs. 6,125/- to that of Rs.

Starches from the wheat (UP262, PBW343), rice (PB2, PD19) and millets (Finger millet VL Mandua-352, Barnyard millet VL Madira-207, Foxtail millet DHFT-109-3) were isolated by alkali extraction method and characterized for morphologically and biochemical properties. The morphological properties of starch granules were studied by scanning electron microscope. The infrared spectroscopy is sensitive to structural changes on starch macromolecule, such as helicoidal chain conformation, crystallinity, retrogradation and water content.

The purpose of this work is to assess microbial contamination level of millet and sorghum in Benin and to identify the molds responsible for this contamination. Sampling (240 millet and 240 sorghum grain) was done in Beninese agroecological zones (I to V) where both cereals are produced. Fungi were isolated using Direct Plating methodand characterised according to macroscopic and microscopic criteria.

Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are involved in protecting higher plants from damage caused by environmental stresses. Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) is an important cereal crop for food and feed in semi-arid areas. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying tolerance to these conditions are not well defined.

Field experiment was conducted during the rainy season of 2015 and 2016 at UAS, Raichur to evaluate the production potential of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) under sole and intercropping with nutri cereal crops under two row proportions of 1:1 and 1:2. Ten treatments consisted of intercropping of pigeonpea with millets (nutri cereals) sorghum, pearl millet and foxtail millet in single and double row proportions and their respective sole stand were evaluated.
