The vulnerability of cyanobacteria to environmental impact and their possible depletion or extinction like other microalgae necessitated the understanding of the distribution of cyanobacterial population in selected aquatic bodies which are important to economic, recreational and religious activity of people. It was also considered important to characterize cyanobacterial population in relation to physico-chemical parameters of water bodies.

Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms capable of producing high value pigments like phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, allophycocyanin, chlorophyll and carotenoids. These high value pigments have immense commercial value as they have applications in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In the present study, using soil and water samples collected from different ecological niches of India, 10 isolates of heterocystous and 09 isolates of non- heterocystous cyanobacteria were obtained.

Isolation and characterization of cyanobacteria from extreme environment is important in identifying novel molecules and understanding the mechanisms underlying the tolerance. Therefore in the present study an attempt was made to isolate, identify and characterize cyanobacteria from Runn of Kutch experiencing high levels of salinity. On the basis of microscopic, morphological and cultural characteristics the identified cyanobacterial strains included Anabaena, Nostoc, Westielliopsis, Phormidium and Synechocystis.

Several phototrophic microorganisms, principally cyanobacteria species predominantly sheathed forms occur as biofilms on the exposed surface of stone temples, monument as well as building facades receiving areas. A study was conducted to analyse the potential of six sub-aerial cyanobacteria species belonging to three genera, i.e.

Temperature tolerance is an important aspect for commercial scale outdoor cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria. While various genes are known to be related to Synechocystis sp. PCC6803's heat shock response, there is very limited published data concerning the specific genes involved in long term thermal tolerance.

Heme oxygenase converts heme into biliverdin, CO, and free iron. In plants, as well as in cyanobacteria, heme oxygenase plays a particular role in the biosynthesis of photoreceptive pigments, such as phytochromobilins and phycobilins, supplying biliverdin IXaas a direct synthetic resource.

Retinoids are C20 apocarotenoids that have various important functions in metazoans. In addition, several findings suggest their occurrence in eubac-teria, including cyanobacteria. It has been shown that the Synechocystis cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP120A1 is a retinoic acid-binding polypeptide. In this work, we determined the reaction catalyzed by CYP120A1 and investigated its substrate specificity in vitro.
