Characterization of mushroom strains

Converting spent mushroom substrates into organic fertilizer helps to tackle the problem of pollution in edible canna starch processing villages and adds new value to the production chain of edible canna. To successfully turn the spent substrates into compost, there is certainly an indispensable role for cellulolytic microorganisms, in which Bacillus strains are always important.

In this study the authors have attempted to domesticate traditionally preferred native oyster mushroom species to make it available as a regular source of nutrition and revenue. With this objective an experiment was designed for round the year cultivation of this wild edible strain in ambient conditions using locally available material as substrates. This study includes details of the collected species, cultivation methodology and biochemical composition of the species.

Characterization of mushroom strains on the basis of physiological conditions and enzymatic activity
A study on 18 strains of mushrooms belonging to 5 genera namely Agaricus, Calocybe, Lentinula, Pleurotus, Tricholomawas done for biochemical and physiological studies. These strains were obtained from Directorate of Mushroom Research, Solan and Mushroom Lab, RPCAU, Pusa. Radial growth measurement of mycelium for optimum growth conditions for all the strains were recorded with respect to different media, temperature and pH. The biochemical screening of enzymatic activities for all the strains was also done for lipase, amylase, laccase and oxidase.

Under present investigation, AMMI (Additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) model was validated to study and identify the stable genotype in Volvariella volvacea (Paddy straw mushroom) under varied environmental conditions. A slight change in temperature and humidity can cause larger difference in the crop yield. Moreover, the identification of strain selection criteria for better yield is also needed to be identified for genetic improvement.
