Charcoal production

This study investigated the status, environmental health risks and assessed contaminant concentrations of flue gas and ambient air quality in traditional charcoal production kiln areas in Hau Giang province. In total, 284 charcoal producers, 160 charcoal workers, and 160 neighbors were interviewed using structured questionnaires.

For each selected value of pyrolysis temperature, three levels of residence time for pyrolysis process were set as 0, 60 and 120 minutes, respectively. Some properties of the final product from the pyrolysis process i.e volatile, ash content, fixed-carbon and higher heating value (HHV) were measured. The experimental results have shown that in the current range of experimental work, charcoal products could get the highest fixed-carbon content at the pyrolysis temperature of 6000C and with the residence time of 120 minutes.

Biochar, a charcoal produced from biomass, can sequester carbon in soil for hundreds to thousands of years. Biochar is created by heating organic material under conditions of limited or no oxygen. Soil organic matter needs to be maintained and further increased to keep soil healthy. Biochar is extremely porous which allows it to retain nutrients and water and improved soil aggregate stability. In the present investigation three carriers, charcoal, mushroom compost, vermicompost were evaluated for the production of bioinoculants. The bacteria used for bioinoculants development was recommended Rhizobium spp. (M1). Charcoal rot (CR) disease caused by Macrophomina phaseolina is responsible for significant yield losses in soybean production. Among the methods available for controlling this disease, breeding for resistance is the most promising. The present study helped to evaluate soybean genotypes for identifying promising genotypes which proved to be resistant to charcoal rot. The present study was carried out at Department of Agricultural Botany, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Akola during the year 2018-19 to evaluate various genotypes of soybean for charcoal rot resistance.

Banana variety Nanjanagudu rasabale has been found growing in parts of Mysuru district, known for its unique aroma, flavour, taste and shelf life but unfortunately deemed as an endangered variety. Having given GI protection hope for bringing this variety back to field by producing disease free tissue culture plants demanded development of an efficient protocol for in vitro regeneration. Phalaenopsis orchids occupy a top position in the international market as pot plant. Commonly used media for growing Phalaenopsis orchid are coconut husk chips, tree bark, fir bark, cocopeat and sphagnum moss. Growing medium is important as it provides anchorage, retains moisture, nutrients and aerates the roots. In addition to these functions, a study was carried out to assess the possible growth promoting effects of sphagnum moss on orchids when used as growing medium. Until the early 1990’s latex production has been the main objective for rubberwood cultivation in Thailand. In 1989 the Thai government established a national natural forests logging ban. This law raised an immediate demand for construction and furniture wood in Thailand. Previously, the rubberwood trunks left over after the latex production, were either used as firewood at the plantation site or in charcoal production. Rubberwood offers qualities to ease off the demand for natural tropical forest trees and this way helps to decrease the pressure on illegal logging.
