Leaves of the genus Cosmos have been studied in chemical constituents and biological activities in Vietnam. However, chemical constituents of Cosmos flowers have not been extensively investigated. The dried purple and white flower powders of Cosmos bipinnatus Cav. were exhautively macerated with ethanol solvent.

Helicteres family widely distributed from southern China to India, Southeast Asia. There are seven species in Vietnam and described as traditional medicinal plants. The information about the chemical constituents of Helicteres hirsuta in Vietnam has not been fully reported. In present work, we presented the isolation and structural elucidation of four terpenoids (1-4) isolated from Helicteres hirsuta L. which collected from Binh Phuoc province.

A phytochemical investigation on the ethanolic (EtOH) extract of the Vietnamese Curcuma longa (C. longa) rhizomes has led to the isolation of four curcuminoids including curcumin (1), demethoxycurcumin (2), bisdemethoxycurcumin (3), and cyclocurcumin (4). The chemical structure of compounds 1-4 was elucidated by Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mass spectrometry (MS) spectral data.

The chemical composition, antioxidant properties and antibacterial activities of different extracts (water, ethanol, acetate ethyl and hexane) and essential oil from Platycladus orientalis leaves were analysed in this study. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation, and its chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

A glucuronoarabinoxylan (CNAL) was extracted with 1% aq. KOH (25 ◦C)from Cocos nucifera gum exudate. It had a homogeneous profile on HPSEC-MALLS-RI (Mw 4.6 × 104 g/mol) and was composed of Fuc, Ara, Xyl, GlcpA (and 4-O-GlcpA) in a 7:28:62:3 molar ratio.

About 0.5 ton of coffee pulp is generated for each ton of coffee cherry processed. In the present study, this waste was investigated as a source of pectin. Coffea arabica L. pulp was dried, treated with ethanol and the pectin extracted with 0.1 M HNO3 (14.6 % yield). Chromatographic, colorimetric and spectroscopic methods were used for pectin characterization.

However, this vegetative protein source has only been used for animal feeding. Spinasterol (1) and four flavonoids (2-5) were isolated from Albizia myriophylla wood collected at Phu Yen province, Vietnam. The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy as well as compared with data in the literature. The contents of some high yield isolated compounds (2-4) in the ethanol extract of A. myriophylla were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. These HPLC chromatograms could be used to reveal the presence of isolated compounds as markers of the sample.

This study aimed to investigate the antitumor-promoting effects of total ethanolic extract from Perilla leaf (PLE) in a two-stage chemical carcinogenesis protocol in mice. Quantitative analysis active compounds in PLE were performed by thin layer chromatography with normal phase of silica gel F254 and HPLC-PDA with reversed phase of C18 column at UV 300 nm. The cutaneous tumors were initiated by a single application by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) on the dorsal shaved skin, then promoted by repeated applications of croton oil during 20 weeks.

By direct method of isolation, total seven potent yeast isolates were obtained namely CP1, CP2, B2X1, B2X2, BE, GE1 and GE2, which were further screened for their better utility. Out of this, best ethanol producer yeast strain BE was further studied for the optimization of different physical and chemical parameters. Maximum ethanol production obtained at pH-7 while optimum xylose concentration for highest ethanol production was found to be 2%. Best economically viable nitrogen source found to be casamino acid.

Amongst six natural lignocellulosic waste/raw material screened, millet straw contained maximum cellulose (30 %) and physical and chemical pre-treatment yielded maximum cellulase activity. The composition of millet straw showed 30 % cellulose, 10 % hemicellulose, 8.73 % total organic carbon, 0.7 % total nitrogen and 0.8 ppm phosphorous. Amongst four fungi of genus Aspergillus isolated from local soil dumps of kitchen and garden waste, Aspergillus flavus showed maximum cellulase activity on CMC agar medium and used for degradation of millet straw.

Ginger ale is a type of beer brewed from malted barley using a warm fermentation with a strain of brewer’s yeast. Ginger ale commonly contains water, sugar, ginger extract, lime and other spices. The objective of this study was to modify traditional Ginger ale formulation, to produce a beer like beverage with substitution of hops by ginger and incorporation of malt and yeast at various proportions under natural and controlled fermentation and to evaluate the chemical, microbial and sensory properties of the beverage.
