The study was aimed to investigate the effects of different microwave heating times (1, 2, and 3 min at output microwave of 800 W) in comparison with the traditional heating (3 min, 110oC) on some physico-chemical properties and sensory evaluation. The consumer survey for the final product use was also conducted to determine whether there is a significant difference in general liking of the product with gender. The results indicated that the product with the shorter microwave heating time contained higher protein and reducing sugar compared to traditional heating.

Invasion by alien perennial weed Mikania micrantha has created a serious problems in Southeast Asia. This climbing vine possesses very fast growth rate and could multiply from seed and vegetative parts. It climbs on other plants, create a dense cover and block sunlight thereby damage or kill the other plant. It compete for water, soil nutrient and release allele-chemicals inhibiting growth of plants. The weed creates economic loss to plantation, horticultural crops, displaces and kills native vegetation. It is designated as one of the worst invasive plants of the world. M.

Little is known about the phytotoxic effects of essential oils from Pine species, GC and GC/MS analysis of Pinus radiata D. Don essential oil obtained from needles, resulted in the identification of 49 components comprising 97.6 % of the oil totality. The composition was l dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons (86.4 %) with β-pinene (40.2 %), limonene (25.5 %) and α-pinene (15.2 %) were the major compounds.

The study species possess seed coat imposed dormancies that require pre-sowing seed treatments. Based on the results, the best treatments to release dormancy in both S. galpinii and V. robusta are sulphuric acid and mechanical scarification, as these yielded the highest, fastest and most uniform germination of seeds.

Nano-particles can improve plant’s tolerance against different stresses (Harrison, 1996). Engineered nano-particles can enter into the plant cells and can also transport DNA and chemicals into plant cells (Torney et al., 2007).

Groundnut kernels are highly sensitive to seed deterioration mainly due to their chemical composition and moisture content. During the seed deterioration membrane degradation precedes loss of seed vigour and germination. Membrane degradation is measured by the electrical conductivity of seed leachate.

Induced mutations not only alter the plant genome but also affect the cellular component which leads to changes in seed germination to maturity traits. The aim of the present study was to investigate the somatic effect of chemical mutagen Ethyl Methane Sulphonate (EMS) on seed germination, shoot length, root length, plant photosynthetic pigments and nine yield attributing traits of two white seeded sesame varieties.

Sweet corn (Zea mays L. spp. saccharata) also known as sugar corn is a hybridized variety of maize (Zea mays L.) specifically bred to increase the sugar content. The information on storage of sweet corn seeds to preserve viability and vigour from harvest to next planting season is of prime importance in any seed production programme. Certain seed treatments and storage containers are known to influence the storability of seeds in several crops.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum Linn) is one of the most consumed vegetables in the world and is a dietary source of vitamin, minerals, and fiber, which are important for human nutrition and health. It is extensively grown throughout the world. Sodium Azide is a chemical mutagen that has become an important tool to enhance agronomic traits of crop plants. It is being used to produce resistance in various susceptible crops to improve their yield and quality traits against harmful pathogens.

Zinc oxide (ZnO), Silver (Ag), nanoparticles were synthesised using simple chemical route which were characterised using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Particle Size Analyzer and Raman Spectroscopy. Size of Zinc oxide (ZnO), Silver (Ag) Copper oxide nanoparticles measured 16-50 nm, 50-100 nm, respectively to conform the nano-size. Onion seeds when dry dressed with the synthesised nanoparticles each at 750, 1000, 1250 and 1500 mg kg-1, the dose of 1000 mg kg-1 outperformed in enhancing the germination (72%), shoot length (7.5 cm) root length (6.

This study was performed by exposing the seeds of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) to ethyl methane sulphonate [EMS] sodium azide [SA] to study their effects on various morphological traits when compared with control. The seeds of groundnut were pre-soaked in distilled water for 6 hours for ems and 24 hrs for SA. The SA, EMS solution was prepared in distilled water. Each concentration of SA, EMS was prepared in 100ml of distilled water for 300 groundnut seeds. These soaked seeds treated with different concentration of SA, EMS such as 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8, 0.10% and 0.12 %.

Rice variety ADT (R) 46 seeds have the problem of poor storage and therefore, to increase the storability of the seeds an experiment was conducted at Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduthurai during 2016-18 by treating the seeds with different chemicals and leaf extracts. The results showed that the seeds treated with antioxidant, α - tocopherol (Vitamin - E) @ 1 % for 18 h and stored in polylined gunny bag have recorded the higher germination (95 %) and seedling vigour upto six months compared to control.

In the present study, SDS-Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to separate protein sub units of albumin and globulin under reducing conditions to study the induction or disappearance during inhibition of germination. The molecular masses of the albumin and globulin protein subunits were estimated in relation to the motilities of the standard molecular mass proteins (Bio-Rad). However the SDS PAGE resolution of seed albumin in Pusa vishal and K851 showed 9-13 band corresponding to 110-5.

Priming on biochemical changes was tested on two seed lots L1: Fresh seeds (> 91 % Germination) and L2: Aged seeds (< 70 % Germination). The seeds were treated with priming chemicals 12 hours of soaking viz., C1: Control, C2: Hydropriming, C3: KH2PO4 (1 %), C4: GA3 (400 ppm), C5: NaCl (1 %), C6: KCl (2 %), C7: KNO3 (2 %), C8: CaCl2.2H2O (2 %), C9: PEG (-1Mpa), C10: K2HPO4 (1 %). Among the various seed priming treatments KH2PO4 (1 %) is the suitable priming chemical to improve the marginal quality sunflower seed lots viz., higher total dehydrogenase activity (OD@ A480nm) (0.

Among the various seed priming treatments KH2PO4 (1 %) is the suitable priming chemical to improve the marginal quality sunflower seed lots viz., germination (89.67 %), speed of germination (19.22), days to 50 % germination (2.15), seedling length (28.83 cm), seedling dry weight (64.44 mg) and seedling growth ratio (1.44) compared to control (81.83 %, 15.91, 2.74, 23 cm 55.03 mg and 1.20 respectively). Priming treatments are more effective in marginal seed lots compared to fresh seeds.Physiological seed quality.

All the chemical treatments resulted in significantly higher strawberry seed germination over control. Ethrel 5000 ppm recorded highest germination (86 %) after 30 days of experiment followed by 200 ppm gibberellic acid (84.33 %) and 1000 ppm ethrel (80.67 %). Least germination (19.0 %) was observed in control. H2SO4 36N resulted in maximum in vitro strawberry seed germination and it was statistically at par with H2SO4 30N. Minimum number of days (2.00) to 50 per cent germination was also recorded with 36 N H2SO4. Maximum number of days (7.00) was taken by the lowest concentration of H2SO4.
