Crown gall disease, caused by the pathogenic bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens, is responsible for extensive economic losses in orchards. Cherry rootstock ‘CDR-1’ (Prunus mahaleb) shows high resistance but the mechanism remains unclear.

The private seed producing companies and public institutes have released many varieties and hybrids with particular characteristics like high yielding, enhanced fruit quality, tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress etc. But we may not have all these characters in a single variety or hybrids, so, we can go for grafting where the best characters of both scion and rootstock could efficiently utilized. The selection of particular rootstock and scion material depends on purpose of grafting, environmental conditions and objective of experiment.

A study was carried out to establish efficient and reliable in vitro propagation protocol for Gisela 5 (Prunus cerasus x Prunus canescens) - clonal cherry rootstock. Axillary and terminal buds of ‘Gisela 5’ were collected in the spring and cultured on MS medium. After the in vitro cultures were sufficiently established, experiments were conducted to assess the influence of different levels of benzyladenine (BA), kinetin (Kin), thidiazuron (TDZ), gibrellic acid (GA3) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) on in vitro shoot multiplication.

Prunus cerasus L. ‘Oblačinska’ sour cherry germplasm was established in vitro directly from in situ plants on different explant collection dates, enabling quick clonal multiplication and introduction to a rootstock breeding program. Rosette initiation of four investigated genotypes was possible from November to April on the medium containing Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) macroelements, Murashige and Skoog (MS).

The effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on micropropagation of CAB-6P and Gisela 6 cherry rootstocks were investigated. Shoot multiplication of CAB-6P was reduced by adding 4.4 µM 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and SNP.

Somatic embryogenesis is a powerful tool for clonal propagation and plant breeding in many plant species, but its application is limited by the genotype response based on the interaction between gene expression and culture conditions.

Sweet cherry and sour cherry production in Turkey occupies an important place in worldwide production and is still of considerable importance in terms of providing further fruit species and gene resources. In this study, 88 sweet cherry, 16 sour cherry, and 9 mahaleb types displaying potential for cultivar rootstocks were selected from wild cherry populations in Samsun Province of the Central Black Sea Region in Turkey.

As the production benefits of pruning fruit trees have been realized, growers have begun pruning periodically and, accordingly, various canopy training systems have begun to be developed. Following the genetic development of dwarfing rootstocks, interest has grown in the creation of modern training systems for smaller, more efficient orchards.
