Fusarium wilt of chickpea is a widely distributed and the most destructive disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri. The main objective of this experiment is to identify the effective Bacillus isolates against Fusarium oxysporium f.sp. ciceri under in vitro condition. A total of five Bacillus spp. isolates (TB1, TB2, TB3, TB4 and TB5) were isolated from rhizhosphere region of tomato and eight Bacillus subtilis isolates (BS4, B, KPB5, KK, BSD3, C1, G1, and B2) were collected from Department of plant pathology TNAU.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the major pulses in human diet for essential source of inexpensive protein. Wilt disease is one of the major constraints in production of chickpea caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri is widespread in chickpea growing areas resulting in considerable economic losses. Surveys were conducted during the rabi season of 2014-2015 and 2015-16 to obtain information on the distribution and natural incidence of chickpea wilt in the Agro-ecological condition of undulating red and lateritic zone of West Bengal, India.

Wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporium f. spciceris is a devastating disease of chickpea. It occurs in 2 stages; seedling stage (0-30%) and reproductive stage (0-57%). Annual chickpea yield loss due to Fusarium wilt was estimated to be 10% in India. So, our objective is to control chickpea wilt disease by using Trichoderma based biofilms as an alternative to chemical fungicides. Trichoderma viride is a potential antagonistic fungi which prevents diseases like wilt, brown rot, damping off, charcoal rot etc.

Several biotic and abiotic constraints significantly reducing the chickpea area and production over last two decades. Among biotic stresses, fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri (Foc) is the major soil-borne fungus affecting chickpea production globally. This crop (chickpea) is subjected to attack by a number of fungal, viral, bacterial and nematode diseases. Inadequate information is available on the Fusarium wilt of gram as regards to seed-borne nature. Cultural, morphological and molecular characteristics of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri, eight isolates indicated a great variability amongst them. However, the isolate FOC-2 (Jalna) exhibited maximum mycelial growth of 90.00 mm. The isolates viz., Jalna (FOC-2) and Beed (FOC-3) produced partially submerged (FOC-2) to submerged (FOC-3) white sparse dense growth with smooth margin and bright white substrate pigmentation. Maximum micro-conidial, macro-conidial and chlamydospore size (17.20 µm, 30.50 x 7.00 µm and 21.80 x 19.60 µm) was recorded in isolate Jalna (FOC-2).

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri is one of the most destructive pathogen, causing wilt disease in chickpea and thereby inflicting accountable quantitative (48.29%) as well as qualitative losses. All the six fungal and two bacterial bioagents tested in vitro, exhibited significant mycelial growth inhibition of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri. However, Trichoderma viride recorded significantly highest mycelial growth inhibition (75.55%), followed by Trichoderma harzianum (73.77%) Trichoderma koningii (71.88%) and Pseudomonas fluorescens (43.77%).
