Developmental disabilities have diverse genetic causes that must be identified to facilitate precise diagnoses. We describe genomic data from 371 affected individuals, 309 of which were sequenced as proband-parent trios.

Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN) have higher rates of oral diseases and tooth decay compared with the general population. Children with developmental disorders/ disabilities (DD) are a subset of CSHCN whose oral health has not been specifically addressed.

Results indicate that teachers lack the knowledge of some features associated with disorders and developmental disabilities. Despite being common disorders in school children, teachers lacked necessary knowledge pertaining to LD and ADHD. This study also proposed an original tool for objectively measuring the teacher’s knowledge.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and moderate to severe intellectual disability (ID) face many challenges. There is little evidence-based research into educational settings for children with ID and ASD and in France. Little is known about how this unserved population could benefit from intervention and education.

Early Intervention (EI) is a federally mandated, state-administered system of care for children with developmental delays and disabilities under the age of three. Gaps exist in the process of accessing EI through pediatric primary care, and low rates of EI access are well documented and disproportionately affect poor and minority children.

Consideration of the quality of life in relation to individual health status is crucial for planning and maintaining a system of patient-centered care. Until recently, there have been no suitable instruments to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL,) of children and adolescents with severe, non-ambulant cerebral palsy (GMFCS functional levels IV and V).

The positive effects of early developmental intervention (EDI) on early child development have been reported in numerous controlled trials in a variety of countries. An important aspect to determining the efficacy of EDI is the degree to which dosage is linked to outcomes.

The outcomes of psycho-educational interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) comorbid with severe to moderate intellectual disability (ID) are insufficiently documented. In this prospective study, we examined a developmental individual, interactive and intensive approach, called the ‘3i method’, which is based on play therapy.

Spasticity remains a major cause of disability among children with cerebral palsy (CP). Effective management depends on careful assessment and an interdisciplinary treatment approach. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cold therapy when used in combination with conventional physical and occupational therapy to control upper limbs’ spasticity and to improve hand function in children with spastic CP. Thirty children of both sexes (12 girls and 18 boys) with spastic CP with ages ranged from 4 to 6 years (mean age 62.2 ± 7.5 months) participated in this study.

Children, in general, are healthier than their adult counterparts, particularly as adults reach the fifth decade of life and beyond. However, children do have multiple acute illnesses each year, and a substantial number of children, often estimated to be 20 percent or more, are burdened with chronic health disorders, some of them disabling or life threatening. Medical attention, including evidence-based prescription of drugs or biologics, is vital for their well-being.

During both the second and third residency years, the pediatric residents had a four-week rotation of developmental and behavioral pediatrics/pediatric neurology. The schedule for this rotation was set by the developmental pediatricians who were also the project coordinators of PPHE. The partner family was contacted, and the family and community agency visits were added to the schedule of the rotation. During the third year, the physicians visited the same partner family they met the year before. This allowed them to observe the changes after a year of development and services.

Stony Brook had several expectations upon receiving the DDPC Parent Partners grant. Project leaders looked forward to receiving curricular materials that would facilitate educating the residents in the care of children with developmental disabilities. The intention was to incorporate these PPHE materials into the established curriculum on children with developmentally disabilities and their families.

You probably picked up this book because you are the parent, teacher, or extended family member of a child whom others may view as broken—whose behavior is often out of control, who has problems making and keeping friends, who is uncooperative and headstrong, and who is underachieving even though you know he is bright. Chances are, this child belongs to a unique group of children known as twice-exceptional (2e) learners.
