Ebook "New frontiers in photochromism" focused not only on the above-mentioned classical subjects in photochromism, such as color changes, optical memory, and optical switches, but also on fundamental physicochemical studies and unprecedented application fields that have not yet been explored in photochromism. The latter topics include light-driven mechanical motion, photocontrol of surface wettability, metal deposition on solid materials, photocontrol of chiral properties, ultrafast decoloration dyes, and femtosecond laser experiments, among others.

Ebook "New organocatalytic strategies for the selective synthesis of centrally and axially chiral molecules" discusses the use of asymmetric organic catalysis for the direct enantioselective synthesis of complex chiral molecules, and by addressing the many aspects of both vinylogy and atropisomerism, it appeals to researchers and scholars interested in both areas. Organocatalysis is a relatively modern and “hot” topic in the chemical community; it is constantly expanding and its use has been extended to interesting areas like vinylogous reactivity and atropisomerism.

Ebook "Chirality and life: A short introduction to the early phases of chemical evolution" presents the fascinating formation of the first simple bioorganic molecules and describes the hidden aspects of chiral compounds, which raise questions on the molecular beginnings of life. The occurrences of extraterrestrial, non-standard amino acids in meteorites are dealt with in detail, as well as their subsequent transfer to proteinogenic amino acids.

Prostereoisomerism (PIM), representing a subgroup within the achiral class of molecules, is manifested in a chiral environment. Although this is regardless of the orientation of the prostereoisomeric (PIC) molecule, PIM is manifested most emphatically in relation to a chiral surface (‘two-dimensional chirality’). Then PIM is tantamount to ‘de facto chirality’ as attachment of the PIC molecule to the surface leads to diastereomeric possibilities (cf. Ogston’s hypothesis).

In this chapter, we study the three-dimensional structures of molecules to understand their stereochemical relationships. We compare the various types of stereoisomers and study ways to differentiate among stereoisomers. In future chapters, we will see how stereochemistry plays a major role in the properties and reactions of organic compounds.

Chirality is a phenomenon that is manifested throughout the natural world, ranging from fundamental particles through the realm of molecules and biological organisms to spiral galaxies. Thus, chirality is of interest to physicists, chemists, biologists, and astronomers. Chiroptical spectroscopy utilizes the differential response of chiral objects to circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation. Applications of chiroptical spectroscopy are widespread in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and physics. It is indispensable for stereochemical elucidation of organic and inorganic molecules.

Chirality plays a major role in biological processes, and the enantiomers of a bioactive molecule often possess different biological effects. For example, all pharmacological activity may reside in one enantiomer of a molecule, or enantiomers may have identical qualitative and quantitative pharmacological activity. In some cases, enantiomers may have qualitatively similar pharmacological activity, but different quantitative potencies.
