Chiral separation mechanism

Ebook "Chiral recognition in separation methods: Mechanisms and applications" reminds us that vancomycin, one of the macrocyclic glycopeptide selectors, has strong antibiotic properties and proposes, using vancomycin as an example, and that the antibiotic and enantioselective interactions are related. Solvent effects are very important and yet very difficult to predict accurately. The different author approaches should give an idea to the reader on the complexity of the chiral separation problem.

The influence of heterogeneity, however, cannot be studied experimentally. In this study, we employed two reversed phase columns with different retention mechanisms to show that by serially coupling the columns, the obtained thermodynamic parameters are not related to the results obtained on the respective individual columns.

The enantioselective separation of newly prepared, pharmacologically significant isopulegol-based ßamino lactones and ß-amino amides has been studied by carrying out high-performance liquid chromatography on diverse amylose and cellulose tris-(phenylcarbamate)-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs).

Although the technologies on chiral/enantiomer separation and stereoselective analysis have matured in the past ca. 20 years, the development of new, even more advanced chiral separation materials, mechanisms and methods still belong to the more challenging tasks in separation science and analytical chemistry. An analysis of recent trends indicates that capillary electrophoresis (CE) can show real advantages over chromatographic methods in ultratrace chiral determination of biologically active ionogenic compounds in complex matrices, including mostly biological ones....
