Chitin nanofiber

Procedures for chitin nanofiber or nanocrystal extraction from Crustaceans modify the chitin structure significantly, through surface deacetylation, surface oxidation and/or molar mass degradation. Here, very mild conditions were used to disintegrate chitin fibril bundles and isolate low protein content individualized chitin nanofibers, and prepare nanostructured high-strength chitin membranes.

Physical adsorption has shown to be facile and highly effective to deposit chitosan nanowhiskers (CsNWs, 60 % deacetylated, length: 247 nm, thickness: 4–12 nm, width:15 nm) on electrospun cellulose acetate nanofibers (CANFs, 560 nm) to effect complete surface charge reversal from negatively charged CANFs (− 40 mV) to positively charged CsNWs-adsorbed CANFs (+8 mV).

Herein, environmentally benign chitin nanofiber (ChNF) membranes were fabricated by regulating suspension behavior. The introduction of zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIF-8) into the composite membranes led to the domain formation of ChNF derived by coordinative interaction, resulting in pore size-tunable membranes.

Some studies have reported the method for treating the spent mushroom substrate (SMS). However, the effective use as a functional raw material based on properties of SMS remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we investigated the usefulness of SMS in agriculture to develop a new method for treating and utilizing it.

Aluminum-coated polypropylene films are commonly used in food packaging because aluminum is a great gas barrier. However, recycling these films is not economically feasible. In addition, their end-of-life incineration generates harmful alumina-based particulate matter.
