Chlorpyrifos (organophosphate) pesticide
-
The aim of this research is to determine the tolerance of Pseudomonas species and Bacillus species to Chloropyrifos and Cyahalothrin pesticides. The study area was the Rivers State University school farm, Faculty of Agriculture, Rivers State, Nigeria. The University farm is a large area of land that specializes in fish farming, livestock farming, poultry farming and all types of agricultural product farming. The university farm has also been used by students for research purposes.

Chlorpyrifos (0, 0 – diethyl 0 - (3, 5, 6 – trichloro – 2 - pyridyl phosphorothioate) is broadspectrum pesticide with trade names Dursban, Lorsban and Spannit, displaying insecticidal activity against Lepidoptera, Diptera, Homoptera, Coleoptera, Orthoptera, Hymenoptera and Hemiptera. However, these organophosphates pesticides have acute neurotoxicity as they suppress acetylcholine esterase (AChE). Hence, present study deals with exploring bacteria for chlorpyrifos degradation ability. Total 10 different samples were collected from soil where chlorpyrifos pesticide was applied.

Chlorpyrifos (O,O-diethyl O-3, 5, 6-trichloro-2-pyridyl phosphorothioate) is a widely used broad-spectrum organophosphate pesticide. Widespread and indiscriminate use of Chlorpyrifos has led to severe environmental problems. Bioremediation would be the only eco-friendly solution for Chlorpyrifos persistence in the environment. Many bacteria are capable of degrading Chlorpyrifos in liquid media. Thus, the current study attempted to isolate Chlorpyrifos degrading bacteria from pesticide applied soil.
