The widespread use of antimicrobials in husbandry has increased antimicrobial residues in animal faeces. Therefore, the investigation of antimicrobials in animal faeces is essential because they are the main cause of environmental pollution. This study analyzed and assessed samples of chiken, cow and swine faeces for seven antimicrobials, namely trimethoprim (TRI), ormethoprim (ORM), ofloxacin (OFL), norfloxacin (NOR), tetracycline (TET), chlortetracycline (CTE) and tylosin (TLS).

Fluorinated carboxylic acids have been in use as ion-pairing reagents for over three decades. It has been observed that ion-pairing reagents not only increase the retention of oppositely charged analytes on reversed-phase HPLC columns but also decrease the retention of similarly charged analytes.

In the last decade, the consumption trend of organic food has increased dramatically worldwide. However, the lack of reliable chemical markers to discriminate between organic and conventional products makes this market susceptible to food fraud in products labeled as “organic”.

This paper builds on the fact that high aspect ratio rectilinear tubing columns of the same length and outside dimensions can double column efficiency. It demonstrates that further improvements in efficiency can be made by using rectilinear tubing columns with half the wall thickness thus replacing heavy PTFE with light solvent systems and producing lighter higher capacity columns.

Increasing column/tubing aspect ratio has been shown in a feasibility study to improve column efficiency when operating in reversed phase mode. This paper contains a thorough investigation on how increases in mobile phase flow and centrifugal force field affect stationary phase retention and column efficiency (as measured by the resolution between adjacent peaks) for columns wound with rectilinear tubing of different aspect ratio.

Two isomeric biphenyl neolignans, magnolol and honokiol, are considered as constituents responsible for the healing effect of magnolia bark, a traditional Oriental medicine. To survey the increasing number of dietary supplements that contain magnolia bark or its extract, an affordable quantitative thin-layer chromatography (TLC) – densitometry method was developed.

Lipid oxidation is one of the major causes of food spoilage for lipid-rich foods. In particular, oil-in-water emulsions, like mayonnaises and spreads, are prone to oxidation due to the increased interfacial area that facilitates contact between the lipids and hydrophilic pro-oxidants present in the water phase. Polar, amphiphilic lipid species present at the oil/water interface, like the mono- (MAGs) and di-acylglycerols (DAGs).

Deploying two salts in hydrophobic interaction chromatography can significantly increase dynamic binding capacities. Nevertheless, the mechanistic understanding of this phenomenon is lacking. Here, we investigate whether surface tension or ionic strength govern dynamic binding capacities of the chromatographic resin Toyopearl Butyl-650 M in dual salt systems.

Food analysis is a tremendously broad field that is constantly evolving. New methods have emerged to increase productivity, such as modern miniaturized and robotic analytical techniques. In this paper, a microsolid-phase extraction system (μ-SPE) for clean-up was combined with a robotic autosampler to yield ready-to-analyze extracts.

Due to the increasing number of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) used in the clinic, there is an increasing need for robust analytical methods to quantify total mAb concentrations in human plasma for clinical studies and therapeutic drug monitoring. We developed an easy, rapid, and robust sample preparation method for liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis.

Structural elucidation of compounds detected with liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry is a challenging and time-consuming step in the workflow of non-targeted analysis and often requires manual validation of the results. Retention time, alongside exact mass, isotope pattern, fragmentation spectra, and collision cross-section, is valuable information for ruling out unlikely structures and increasing the confidence in others.

In preparative and industrial chromatography, the current viewpoint is that the dynamic binding capacity governs the process economy, and increased dynamic binding capacity and column utilization are achieved at the expense of productivity. The dynamic binding capacity in chromatography increases with residence time until it reaches a plateau, whereas productivity has an optimum.
