Chromobacterium violaceum

The genus Chromobacterium, of which 12 species have been recognized, comprises bacteria that reside in tropical and subtropical environments. Of these species, Chromobacterium violaceum and Chromobacterium haemolyticum are known to cause infections in humans.

In our study, we evaluate antimicrobial, antiquorum sensing (QS) and antioxidant activity of Usnea longissima secondary metabolites extracted in acetone, methanol, and 70% hydroalcoholic solvents. Antimicrobial activity of extracts was evaluated against fungus (Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans) and six bacterial (Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aerogenosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans) strains.

Chromobacterium violaceum is a rare pathogen that causes potentially fatal infections in human beings. It is a normal inhabitant of soil and stagnant water of the tropical and subtropical areas. Chromobacterium violaceum infection usually occurs after broken skin exposed to contaminated soil or water. The organism is mostly resistant to pencillins and cephalosporins and sensitive to fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides. Rapid progression to sepsis with metastatic abscesses is the striking feature of C. violaceum infection .

This work was aimed at isolating AHL degrading bacteria from fish culture pond soil, with abilities appropriate for use as probiotic in aquaculture. The presence of an autoinducer inactivation (aiiA) homologue gene and AHL-inactivation assay showed that BacillusthuringiensisQQ17, which was one among the 20 isolates, could rapidly degrade synthetic C6-HSL in vitro and hampered violacein production by Chromobacterium violaceum.
