In this study, the banded karyotypes (C- and Ag-nucleolus organizer regions (NORs)) of Myotis emarginatus in Turkey were determined for the first time. The karyotype contained 44 chromosomes, the number of chromosomal arms (NF) was 54, and the number of autosomal arms (NFa) was 50. Slight C-heterochromatic blocks were observed in the centromeric regions of some autosome pairs, whereas the sex chromosomes were euchromatic. The Ag-NORs were detected in the short arms of a large and a medium-sized acrocentric autosome. The distribution of C-heterochromatin regions in Turkish populations of M.

The identification of chromosomes among Avena species have been studied by C-banding and in situ hybridization. However, the complicated results from several cytogenetic nomenclatures for identifying oat chromosomes are often contradictory.

During the present study, mitotic chromosomes of freshwater snail Sphaerium indicum were studied using gills. The observed diploid chromosome number was 2n=30 consisting of 26 metacentric pairs and 04 submetacentric pairs respectively. Chromosomes were studied using Giemsa staining and two banding techniques viz. C-banding and Ag-NOR banding. Preliminary C-band studies revealed the presence of terminal blocks besides the presence of centromeric heterochromatin. The nucleolar organizer region (NOR) was found on one chromosome pair i.e. on the submetacentric chromosome pair no. 5.

The cytogenetic study was conducted on total 30 breeding bucks of Osmanabadi and Boer breed (15 of each) to find out chromosomal abnormalities and to study QFQ- banding pattern of the chromosomes. Short term lymphocyte culture technique was used for the display chromosomal metaphases. The few slides were conventionally stained with 4 per cent giemsa stain and some were subjected for QFQ banding. The modal diploid chromosome number was 2n=60 for breeding bucks of Osmanabadi and Boer breed of goat.

The present study reports the karyotype, C-banding, and nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) of 6 Sus scrofa (Linnaeus, 1758) males from Anatolia. The karyotype of S. scrofa comprised (2n) 38 chromosomes, the number of chromosomal arms (FN) was 64, and the number of autosomal arms (FNa) was 60. C-positive regions appeared to be restricted to the centromeric regions of autosomes 1, and 13-18, and the entire long arm of the Y chromosome.

Conventional and GTC, CTC, and AgNO3 banded karyotypes of brown hares (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) from Turkey are described for the first time. All specimens possessed a diploid number of 2n = 48 chromosomes and a fundamental autosomal number of NFa = 88.

In the present study, the 2n = 54 chromosomal race of blind mole rats, Nannospalax xanthodon superspecies, from Kırıkkale Province in Turkey was investigated. Conventional chromosome staining, Ag-NOR (Nucleolus Organizer Region) staining, and C-banding analysis were carried out on specimens of mole rats.

Further development of banding techniques and study of prometaphase chromosomes facilitated better identification of these variations with high resolution. Culturing of free amniocytes was another breakthrough that allowed the identification of chromosomal abnormalities associated with birth defects. These classical cytogenetic techniques became mandatory for several clinical conditions and were adopted by many laboratories as a routine.

Applications of FISH The majority of FISH applications involve hybridization of one or two probes of interest as an adjunctive procedure to conventional chromosomal banding techniques. In this regard, FISH can be utilized to identify specific chromosomes, characterize de novo duplications or deletions, and clarify subtle chromosomal rearrangements. Its greatest utilization, however, is in the detection of microdeletions (see below). Though conventional cytogenetic studies can detect some microdeletions, initial detection and/or confirmation with FISH is essential.
