The prevalence of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus in infectious diseases is increasing in Vietnam for recent years. Therefore, novel class of antibiotic or active compounds is indispensable to treat this common worldwide pathogen. In the present study, we investigated the antibacterial activities of Cleistocalyx operculatus (Roxb.) Merr. et Perry leaves collected in Quang Nam.

The problem of increasing resistance against conventional antibiotics has drawn people’s attention. Therefore, the development of novel antibacterial agents with effective and safe therapeutic effects is imminent. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered a promising class of antibacterial agents due to their broad antibacterial spectrum.

A new class of 2-[4-(1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)phenyl]-1H-benzimidazoles (13–22) were synthesized via cyclocondensation reaction of the substituted 1,2-phenylenediamines (1,4–12) and 1-(4-formylpheny)-1H-benzimidazole (3). The synthesized compounds were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities against S. aureus, methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Candida albicans by the tube dilution method. Compounds 13, 15, 18, 20, and 21 have moderate antifungal activity against C. albicans.

Researchers have extensively focused on marine originated antimicrobial drugs, looking at the fact that terrestrial source of antibiotics are exhausted and demand of newer class of antimicrobials due to ever increasing resistance level in existing drug classes. Antibiotics like antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal agents are among the pharmaceutical agents being developed from marine resources (Mayer and Hamann, 2002).

Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic that has been used extensively for treating methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) associated infections. However, the prevalence of resistance to mupirocin is being increasingly found due to its irrational and widespread use. Retapamulin: a pleuromutilin antibacterial agent is an effective topical antibiotic against these resistant strains.

Myroides spp. have historically been rare opportunistic pathogens although present widely in nature. Their notorious resistance to most classes of antibacterials and invasive potential leading to serious infections among the immunocompromised population calls for appropriate testing and management of the infections caused by Myroides spp.

Plants have been known to be a reservoir of secondary metabolites which are being exploited as source of bioactive substance for various pharmacological purposes. In the present study, fresh leaf extracts of hibiscus were prepared using ethanol, methanol and distilled water. The extracts were assessed for the presence of various classes of phytochemicals by subjecting to different tests and total phenolic content of each extract was carried out using FCR method. Results revealed that all the extracts of hibiscus contained alkaloids, flavonoids and tannins.

Bridelia micrantha commonly known as coastal golden leaf is a member of the family Phyllanthaceae. In preliminary studies, nine fractions, named F1- F9, were obtained by fractionating the crude methanol extract of the stem bark of Bridelia micrantha using column chromatographic techniques. The F6 fraction was found to be the most active when tested for the antibacterial activity. This study is thus aimed at investigating the effect of fractionation on antibacterial activity of F6 fraction.

Pseudomonas represents as one of the most abundant class of bacterial genus in many antagonistic root-associated communities. Pseudomonas spp. residing in the rhizosphere has the ability to produce antimicrobial metabolites including phloroglucinol derivatives 2,4-DAPG, which is a major class of secondary metabolite protecting plants against different types of phytopathogens. The present study was conducted to isolate 2,4-DAPG producing Pseudomonas fluorescens isolates from Rhizosphere soil samples of different crops.

Peptides composed of leucyl and lysyl residues (LK pep-tides) with different compositions and sequences were compared for their antibacterial activities usingcell wall-less bacteria of the classMollicutes(acholeplasmas, mycoplas-mas and spiroplasmas) as targets. The antibacterial activity of the amphipathica-helical peptides varied with their size, 15 residues beingthe optimal length, independent of the membrane hydrophobic core thickness and the amount of cholesterol.

Cationic antimicrobial peptides are naturally occurring antibiotics that are actively being explored as a new class of anti-infective agents. We recently identified three cathelicidin antimicrobial peptides from chicken, which have potent and broad-spectrum antibacterial activitiesin vitro (Xiao Y, Cai Y, Bommineni YR, Fernando SC, Prakash O, Gilliland SE & Zhang G (2006)J Biol Chem281, 2858–2867).

For the last 60 or so years the chemotherapy of bacterial infections has been dominated by natural products and their semi-synthetic variants. Although the term antibiotic was initially used exclusively to describe those anti-bacterials of natural or semi-synthetic origin, it has become broadened in common usage to include antibacterial agents of purely synthetic origin as well. The emphasis of this chapter will be on the discovery of novel prototype structures that represent the different classes of antibiotic e.g.

Introduction: β-Lactum antibiotics constitute an important class of antibacterial agents being used extensively for both humans and food-producing animals to treat or prevent infections. The drugs occasionally cause human deaths due to anaphylactic shock during medical treatments, especially when they are parenterally administered without their prior intracutaneous tests. These cases are usually handled as medical accidents (malpractice), and subjected to autopsies and analysis of the drugs used. These antibiotics are composed of cephems ( Table 10.1) and penicillins ( Table 10.
