Clean agricultural products

Livelihood models for the development of clean agricultural products are considered highly important in the Vietnamese economy and essentially strategic in the context of international integration for Vietnam. The paper is based on secondary data, focusing on the analysis and assessment of the importance of developing clean agricultural products for sustainable development.

In agriculture, post harvest handling is the stage of crop production immediately following harvest, including cooling, cleaning, sorting and packaging. The instant a crop is removed from the ground, or separated from its parent plant, it begins to deteriorate. Post harvest treatment largely determines final quality, whether a crop is sold for fresh consumption or used as an ingredient in a processed food product (Woolfe, 1992).

Production of biofuels, especially bio-ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass, holds remarkable potential to meet the current energy demand as well as to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions for a sustainable clean environment. Rice is one of the most important agricultural crops in India. Rice straw is an important residue which is generated in large amount in India. Every kilogram of grain harvesting is accompanied by the production of rice straw to a tune of 1.0–1.5 kg. Major proportion of the rice straw is burnt in the field itself.

A weed is essentially any plant which grows where it is not required. A weed can be thought of as any plant growing in the wrong place at the wrong time and doing more harm than good. Weeds are the most severe and widespread biological constraint to crop production, and cause invisible damage till the crop is harvested. The composition and competition by weeds are dynamic and dependent on soil, climate, cropping and management factors. Weeds decrease the value of land, particularly perennial weeds, which tend to accumulate on long fallows; increase cost of cleaning.

Indian agriculture is characterized by the ownerships of small land holdings. The small holdings are used for mainly production of food crops. The small farmers inadequately use fertilizers and without or meager irrigation can produce only one crop in a year, which is turn make the farmers economic condition not only pathetic also lead to inability to purchase input required for farming, like fertilizers, good quality seeds etc.

After the oil embargo ended, the use of ethanol increased, even though the price of oil fell and for years stayed low. Ethanol became cheaper to make as its production technology advanced. Agricultural technology also improved, and the price of corn dropped. By 1992, over 1 billion gallons of fuel ethanol were used annually in the United States, and by 2004 usage had risen to over 3.4 billion gallons. Many farm groups began to see ethanol as a way to maintain the price of corn and even to revitalize the rural economy.

Human activities consume and pollute a lot of water. At a global scale, most of the water use occurs in agricultural production, but there are also substantial water volumes consumed and polluted in the industrial and domestic sectors (WWAP, 2009). Water consumption and pollution can be associated with specific activities, such as irrigation, bathing, washing, cleaning, cooling and processing. Total water consumption and pollution are generally regarded as the sum of a multitude of independent water demanding and polluting activities.

Work and Employment. Women play an extremely important role in all dimensions of agricultural production. In certain regions, women's time input equals men's, but in other regions traditions restrict their work to the household where they are involved in crop processing (threshing, cleaning, drying, preserving) and also are in charge of most of the household-based activities (water and fuel collection, cooking, cleaning, sewing, tailoring, weaving, and child rearing). Women play an increasingly important role in opium production, livestock production and processing of dairy products.

Pesticides are used to protect crops from insects, weeds and diseases both in dryland and irrigated crop production in Viet Nam. However, reliance on pesticides in crop production system has the potential to cause environmental problems due to contamination of waterways and of produce, adversely affecting the Vietnamese environment and human health.
