Ebook "Wastewater treatment and reuse in the food industry" is devoted to clean drinking water, which is (one of) the most important asset(s) in the food and beverage industry. In the present time of increasing water scarcity in many areas of the world, supply of clean water especially in the production and packaging chain of foods and beverages, is a crucial issue. This Brief hence outlines why functioning purification and reuse systems for wastewater are becoming more and more interesting and promising technologies in solving the challenge.

Clean water for drinking and cooking has been a serious issue in rural areas of Vietnam, which is mainly due to high-cost treatment of the available water sources in such areas. In order to reduce the treatment cost, iron impregnated ceramic granules (IICGs) was synthesized using a mixture of locally available montmorillonite and crushed rice husk (with the rice husk size < 0.2 mm, IICGs size 0.2 mm – 0.45 mm).

Water scarcity is not a recent problem. Shortage of drinking water is constant, severe, and wide-spread in the worldwide. Worldwide, people are suffering from lack in adequate fresh drinking water. The amount of fresh water on the earth is only 2.53 percent of the total amount. We can be solved this problem by extraction of water from atmospheric air using condensation principle. It is suitable techniques for remote villages in order to produce clean drinking water.

One of the easiest and efficient way of water conservation to solve drinking water scarcity is rooftop water harvesting. However, the technology has some limitations with regard to its purification system. The commonly used sand and gravel filter is very prone to clogging and its cleaning is not an easy job. At the same time, the alternative upward flow mesh filter needs further improvement in cleaning efficiency and some hassle free drain cum back washing mechanism. In upward flow mesh filter system, which creates anaerobic condition will give foul smell.

One of the easiest and efficient way of water conservation to solve drinking water scarcity is rooftop water harvesting. To evaluate the performance of the first flush with micromesh filter system, inflow and outflow of the rooftop water samples were analysed for pH, EC, TDS, SAL and TSS parameters. In general, the PH, electrical conductivity, and TDS of the roof water samples were within the drinking water standards and the first flush with micromesh filter system was found to reduce TDS values.

The Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds are provided $2 billion in FY 2013. As part of the Administration’s long-term strategy, the EPA is implementing a Sustainable Water Infrastructure Policy that focuses on working with states and communities to enhance technical, managerial and financial capacity. Important to the enhanced technical capacity will be alternatives analyses to expand "green infrastructure" options and their multiple benefits.

Growing awareness around the ecological impacts of water withdrawal and discharge increases both reputational and regulatory risks. Healthy aquatic ecosystems are an essential part of local communities and livelihoods, not only by serving as a source of clean drinking water, but also by providing cultural, social, aesthetic and economic value. As a result, significant water withdrawal or wastewater discharge, regardless of the extent of actual impacts on the neighboring communities or ecosystems, inevitably increase the risk of potential conflict with local communities.

Physical water resource constraints make companies more susceptible to reputational risks. Declines in water availability and quality can increase competition for clean water. In water-scarce regions, tensions can arise between businesses and local communities, particularly in developing countries where local populations often lack access to safe and reliable drinking water. Community opposition to industrial water withdrawals and perceived or real inequities in use can emerge quickly and affect businesses profoundly.

The quality of water is central to all of the roles that water plays in our lives. From the beauty of natural waterways teem- ing with wildlife, to the vital livelihoods that clean rivers and streams support, to the essential role that safe water plays in drinking water and health – good water quality is fundamental to the network of life and livelihood that water supports. Water is the source of life on earth, and human civilizations blossomed where there was reliable and clean freshwater.

Energy is a major cost driver when it comes to getting water to the tap and treating wastewater, but our current system does not adequately account for energy needs when planning water-system improvements. A federal lending authority, however, could allow for drinking and clean water infrastructure investments to be coordinated with the expansion of electrical capacity required to support them. Or it could arrange for channel deepening at ports to be planned alongside the bridge replacements required to ensure new and larger freight vessels can access harbors.

A range of factors contributed to this situation, such as the lack of access to basic health facilities - only 40% of the population is in the coverage areas of basic health facilities, and only 9% of rural households surveyed in 2003 reported a health facility in their village;1 lack of female staff at the existing facilities particularly in rural areas; marked rural-urban disparities in availability of health facilities; and lack of infrastructure (roads and transport) and security that reduce mobility and access.

The conditions in which women and children are born, grow up, live and work have a major impact on their health. Efforts to improve health must be closely linked to those intended to tackle poverty and malnutrition, improve access to education, ensure gender equity and empowerment, tackle major diseases, and improve access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and a clean, safe environment. Integrating the care of women and children with other services is an efficient and cost-effective route to success.

Human needs: Health benefits will accrue when human social and cultural needs are satisfied by access to wetlands. Health relates most easily to the direct survival requirements (a full spectrum of which includes water for food, water for drinking, cooking and eating, washing, cleaning, health and healthcare, and for waste removal and assimilation).

Water is essential for life – for health – for human dignity – and for well‑functioning ecosystems. One billion people cannot get clean drinking water and 2.5 billion lack access to basic sanitation. Polluted water and poor sanitation cause 1.5 million preventable child deaths per year. It is the biggest source of child mortality along with malaria and malnutrition. According to the World Health Organisation, investing USD 1 in water and sanitation saves USD 4‑12 in avoided health care costs alone. Good water management is a longstanding policy challenge.

Municipal water accounts for less than a tenth of human water use, but clean drinking water is a critical need. Today, half of the world’s population live in towns and cities and one‐third of this urban population live without clean drinking water. These billion have‐nots are unevenly distributed across the globe: 700 million city dwellers in Asia, 150 million in Africa, and 120 million in Latin America and the Caribbean.
