Climate change on agricultural operations

The human population on the planet is estimated to reach 9 billion by 2050; this requires significant increase of food production to meet the demands. Intensified farming systems have been identified as a viable means to increase grain production. Crop production inputs include carbon investment in the form of energy, for the manufacture and use of farm machinery, synthetic fertilizers, crop protection chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, groundwater irrigation and the direct use of fuel in farm operations.

Natural resources are being consumed at an alarming rate, and the capacity of resources and technologies to satisfy food demand for the growing population remains uncertain. Since agriculture along with its allied sector, is the largest source of livelihood in India having 70% of rural household depending on agriculture as their primary occupation of which 82 % of farmers are small and marginal (FAO, 2019), the use of non monetory inputs by the poor farmers can be quite the most feasible, eco-friendly and climate smart option to preserve the environment and safeguard the natural resources.

Climate is the primary determinant of agricultural productivity. Climate change effects agricultural operations in a number of ways, including through changes in average temperatures, rainfall, and climate extremes. Concern over the potential effects of longterm climatic change on agriculture has motivated a substantial body of research over the past decade. The present study was conducted in Dharwad districts of Karnataka state during 2016-17.

The Indian Sundarbans is a coastal delta and major climate hotspot located in the state of West Bengal. The delta faces significant climatic challenges. The residents mainly depend on agriculture, livestock rearing and fishing. They face challenges of poverty, marginalization and an acute struggle against geo-climatic events. The present study was conducted to know the socio economic status of the farming community under the given resources viz. demographic, physical, economic, natural and social.
