Clinical trial screening
-
Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted clinical trial screening is a promising prospect, although previous matching systems were developed in English, and relevant studies have only been conducted in Western countries.

Global annual cancer incidence is forecast to rise to 27.5 M by 2040, a 62% increase from 2018. For most cancers, prevention and early detection are the most effective ways of reducing mortality. This study maps trials in cancer screening, prevention, and early diagnosis (SPED) to identify areas of unmet need and highlight research priorities.

To demonstrate a data-driven method for personalizing lung cancer risk prediction using a large clinical dataset. Using available clinical datasets such as the National Lung Screening Trial in conjunction with locally collected datasets can help clinicians provide more personalized malignancy risk predictions and followup recommendations.

The significant development in the construction of microscale cell culture platforms and the interest in bioanalytical analysis have recently resulted in the emergence of a new concept of ‘organ-on-a-chip’ systems. Organon-a-chip is a new three-dimensional (3D) in vitro microfabricated unit that contains a multichannel microfluidic cell culture. Even if many informative and useful data are obtained from animal models and in vitro assays, they are still limited for extrapolation to human systems during drug design and development.

One of the key elements in the early stages of drug discovery is finding good hits to develop lead compounds. Although HTS has been used as a standardized technology for hit finding, it still bears some challenging drawbacks: expensive and low-quality data. Aiming at the same goal as HTS, virtual screening (VS) has been developed to reduce cost and increase efficiency. Recent studies show that VS can deliver numerous quality hits and a few of them even reach clinical trials.

Patients with cancer are at increased risk of drug-drug interactions (DDI), which can increase treatment toxicity or decrease efficacy. It is especially important to thoroughly screen DDI in oncology clinical trial subjects to ensure trial subject safety and data accuracy.

Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) are common in participants of lung cancer screening trials and broad population-based cohorts. They are associated with increased mortality, but less is known about disease specific morbidity and healthcare utilisation in individuals with ILA.

Predicting combinative drug pairs towards realistic screening via integrating heterogeneous features
Drug Combination is one of the effective approaches for treating complex diseases. However, determining combinative drug pairs in clinical trials is still costly. Thus, computational approaches are used to identify potential drug pairs in advance.

Colorectal cancer is an important public health problem in Spain. Over the last decade, several regions have carried out screening programmes, but population participation rates remain below recommended European goals. Reminders on electronic medical records have been identified as a low-cost and high-reach strategy to increase participation.

Health service change is difficult to achieve. One strategy to facilitate such change is the clinical pathway, a guide for clinicians containing a defined set of evidence-based interventions for a specific condition. However, optimal strategies for implementing clinical pathways are not well understood.

Immunochemical fecal occult blood tests (iFOBTs) are increasingly used for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. In our preceding observational study, sensitivity for detecting advanced colorectal neoplasms by iFOBT was 70.8% among users of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid compared with 35.9% among non-users (p = 0.001), whereas there were only very small differences in specificity.

A major barrier to effective treatment of glioblastoma (GBM) is the large intertumoral heterogeneity at the genetic and cellular level. In early phase clinical trials, patient heterogeneity in response to therapy is commonly observed; however, how tumor heterogeneity is reflected in individual drug sensitivities in the treatment-naïve glioblastoma stem cells (GSC) is unclear.

The efficacy of a screen-and-treat program is influenced not only by accuracy of the screening test but also by the ability of the treatment, in this case cryotherapy, to eliminate CIN2+ lesions identified by screening. While cryotherapy was highly successful in this trial, eliminating 75 to 77 percent of CIN2+ lesions, this was lower than previously reported 85 to 90 percent cure rates for clinical trials in developed countries and for less rigorous studies in developing regions.

Investigators continue to evaluate screening technologies in meta-analyses, randomized clinical trials, and cervical cancer prevention programs. The new evidence adds support for the use of HPV DNA testing as the primary technology for cervical cancer screening, both in high-resource areas and in developing countries. 6–8 Despite this evidence, significant barriers to widespread use of HPV DNA testing stand in the way, both in high- and low-resource areas.

B REAST CANCER is the most common malignancy in women. At least 180,000 new cases were diagnosed in 1997, more than double that of the next most common neoplasm, lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society over 40,000 American women succumb to this disease each year. Early detection of breast cancer by routine mammographic screening of women without clinical signs or symptoms facilitates earlier treatment and has enhanced survival. As pointed out by Dr.
