  • This study proceeded to address the following objectives: To evaluate the effect of gas composition commonly used in modified atmosphere packaging (80% O2 and 20% CO2) on the shelf life of beef patties; to formulate an optimal solution containing natural antioxidant and antimicrobial preservatives and to study the effect of this combination and MAP on physiochemical attributes (surface colour (chroma, hue angle), metmyoglobin and oxmyoglobin contents, lipid stability) of fresh beef patties; to evaluate the effect of combined antioxidant – antimicrobial natural preservative and MAP on packag...

  • CO2 adsorption capacities of activated carbon-based adsorbents subjected to different treatments, such as HNO3 oxidation, air oxidation, alkali impregnation, and heat treatment under helium gas atmosphere, were determined by gravimetric analyses and reported previously by our group. In the current work, the experimental adsorption isotherms of these modified activated carbon samples were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D-R) models.

  • Mesoporous polyethylene glycol (PEG)/silica and carbon black (CB)/silica xerogel composites were prepared by the solgel method as an adsorbent for CO2 adsorption. The CO2 adsorption process was carried out under pure CO2 atmosphere at room temperature in addition to ambient air. The xerogel composites with high surface area and pore volume showed better CO2 adsorption capacity than the pure silica xerogel. After modifying samples with propylene diamine using the wet impregnation method, an increase in CO2 adsorption capacity was observed for the samples except CB/silica xerogel composite.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the effect of elevated levels of CO2 by exposing the artificially infested cigarette beetle in cured turmeric rhizomes to eight different concentrations of CO2 viz., 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 per cent with three replications of each treatment and the efficacy of treatments was tested based on cured turmeric rhizomes infestation and population buildup of L. serricorne.

  • Oranges were sanitized, dried, peeled, segmented and then dipped in citric acid solution (food grade) at 2% (w/v). Citric acid treated and untreated orange segments were packed with different packaging materials i.e., LDPE, PP and PVC pouches under three different gas compositions i.e., Gas composition 1 (G1: 8% O2 + 15% CO2 + 77% N2); Gas composition 2 (G2: 5% O2 + 10% CO2 + 85% N2); Gas composition 3 (G3: 3% O2 + 5% CO2 + 92% N2) using advanced vacuum packaging machine. After packaging, the sealed covers and control samples of orange segments were immediately stored at 50C.

  • The respiration rates of fresh Bengal gram kernels as a function of O2 and CO2 concentration at 300 C in closed system is studied on the basis of enzyme kinetics. Parameters of three types of Michaelis-Menten equation based on type of inhibition were considered. GraphPad PRISM software was used to find parameters of respiration rate of fresh Bengal gram kernels inform of Michaelis-Menten. The competitive type of inhibition was found as the best type for respiration rate of fresh Bengal gram kernels.

  • Nutritional quality of maize kernel artificially infested by Sitophilus oryzae and exposed to four different CO2 concentrations viz., 20, 40, 60 and 80 per cent in modified atmosphere was studied upto six months of storage. The results revealed that exposure of kernels to 80 per cent CO2 concentration could able to maintain good per cent of carbohydrates (72.93 per cent), total proteins (8.67 per cent), crude fat (5.07 per cent) and crude fibre (2.40 per cent) upto six months of storage followed by 60 per cent CO2 concentration.

  • The experiment was carried out to understand the storability of onion seeds by subjecting to different modified atmospheric storage conditions with different combination of gases like carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen at different concentrations. The experiment was consisted of seed storage of onion (Arka Kalyan) under modified atmospheric storage conditions. There were 15 treatments and the experiment was carried out in Completely Randomized Block Design in four replications. Observations on various seed germination parameters were recorded bimonthly.

  • Respiration rate is the important factor involved in creating a modified atmosphere inside a package that will extend the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables. Thus, modelling respiration rate of the selected produce is crucial to develop a modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) system. In this study, MAP has been combined with 1% Calcium chloride and 1% citric acid solution. Respiration rates of fresh-cut pear packaged in polypropylene pouches at 8 ˚C. A mathematical model describing the dynamics of O2 and CO2 concentrations inside the MAP package of fresh-cut pear was formulated.
