Coaching myths

I must begin by acknowledging my bias. I know Carol well, have experienced her delivery of coaching, and I admire her track record with Richard Branson at Virgin, with the Association for Coaching, and elsewhere. Furthermore it is largely because of all this that she now works with me at Performance Consultants International. It is therefore fairly obvious that I am going to be upbeat about her contribution to the growing coaching library. However, those that know me are aware that I am not inclined to hold back if I don’t like something.

I’m waiting for the judge to raise her arm and nod her head, signaling to me that it’s my turn. Her polyester royalblue suit with the crest makes her appear pathetically regal, like a homeless woman who used to be a traffic cop, still wearing her uniform with faded pride. Glory days. I whip my head around when the audience gasps. Hope Spivey has fallen from the balance beam. The unthinkable has happened. Opportunity. She was the only true challenger left, and now she’s on the ground, no longer perched high on the beam. ...

Looking back in my 26 years in education, I can’t think of a time when a book like this was needed more. Increasingly, we struggle to teach more in less time, prepare students for tests we often find not useful or descriptive, and stay on top of the field by reading new professional titles and research—and we do it all alone.

There is a widespread belief that until we attain some pre-ordained age we are completely malleable. After this we cure like cement and change only marginally as we age. While I believe this notion may be true in a broad context, it is no more than a very rough approximation. I have been fortunate to experience formative influences well after I should have cured.
