In ebook "The chemistry of the catalyzed hydrogenation of carbon monoxide" the energy shock of the early seventies has been healthy and of great conse­ quences in chemistry. Large amounts of research money have been put to work since, and our knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of coal-based chemistry has increased enormously. During several years it appeared inap­ propriate to write a monograph about a topic which was in the midst of such an impetuous development.

Civilization is on a non-renewable energy course upon which we are dependent and which can only be maintained by increasing use of fossil fuel oil and gas and coal, with the result of rising greenhouse gas levels and increasing climate change that leads to increasing ecosystem destruction. It is imperative that civilization bring about an energy transition to a renewable energy economy, which may be based on inexhaustible solar energy, hydrogen, and electricity derived from renewable sources.

Transitioning to a low carbon and climate resilient economy, and more broadly „greening growth‟ will require shifting significant amounts of capital from fossil fuels and resource-intensive and polluting technologies to newer, clean technology and infrastructure.
